Hi,

I'm on 10.5.8 and I'm trying to set access rights on an external USB drive called 'Data'.

Kris (that's me) is the owner and has Read/write access. The drive contains a folder, 'Foto', with also kris as owner. This is how it looks in terminal.

MacMini:Volumes Kris$ ls -l
drwxr-x--- 14 Kris staff 544 5 sep 17:54 Data
...
MacMini: Data Kris$ ls -l
drwxr-x--- 15 Kris staff 510 5 sep 19:11 Foto
When I log in as another user in my Mini, I'm very surprised to see the following:

MacMini:Volumes Claudia$ ls -l
drwxr-x--- 14 Kris staff 544 5 sep 17:54 Data
...
MacMini: Data Claudia$ ls -l
drwxr-x--- 15 Claudia staff 510 5 sep 19:11 Foto

Very strange that at the level of 'Data', Kris is still the owner, but one level deeper, ownership seems to depend on who is logged in??? This seems really strange behaviour to me . Then i discovered the checkbox 'ignore ownership on this Volume' which I unchecked, and I also tried to 'Apply to enclosed Items'. But still user Claudia has read/write access to the folder 'Foto'.

Is it possible to give user Claudia only read rights on the external drive? How?

Hi,

There must be a lot of people working with external drives trying to set access rights. Any experiences to share?
