iPod touch strange symbol on ipod touch screen

turned on my ipod touch to find the screen completely black with a picture of the ipod connection lead with an arrow pointing towards the itunes symbol. havent got a clue that it means. ive tried switchin on and off, reseting by holding the two buttons down at the same time, still comes up with the symbols. only other thing i can think of is that it hasnt been connected to my laptop with the itunes programme on there because the laptop broke. been having to charge my ipod up from the xbox for about 2 months now. before my ipod started coming up with these symbols it could connect to my wifi in the house fine.
so yeah, if anyone knows wtf is going on please enlighten me.

Your iPod needs to be connected to iTunes. Probably to be restored. Can't say why I'm afraid.
