Without reading the article, let me guess...BYU?

    Ding ding ding!

No one forced him to attend. Part of the privilege of attending is agreeing to live by their rules. No sex, no coffee, no booze, no MTV.

IIRC, a girl on The Real World (New Orleans series I think it was) was kicked out of BYU for living in the house with men to whom she was not related. No one forced her to attend BYU, either.

Neither of which are appropriate restrictions. The US isn't Saudi Arabia.

Certainly under UK law contracts are only valid if they are reasonable, my knowledge of US contract law is even weaker than of UK contract law, but I'd expect there are similar rules. This contract hardly seems reasonable.

It's BYU, run by the Morman church. Every student signs the honor code and is aware of the repercussions for breaking the honor code.

As for how they proved it, the guy felt guilty and reported himself. Only reason this is even in the news is because the guy is one of the school's top athletes.

    Unless you are a Prince?

Perhaps he had yet to acquire this lofty status?

I live in Utah and think it is silly.
As to a previous poster, he knew what he was getting into when he signed into this private college.

Word has it that the co-eds there are really hot, and hornier than bunny rabbits.

Sounds like he picked the right University to me.

keep in mind that BYU is a private school run by a very conservative religion....this is only a step away from, say, the catholic church requiring that priests agree not to have have sex

    Really?

How many state and federal dollars did BYU receive last year?

Can a college be "private" if most of its funding comes from the taxpayers?

They've been taking advantage of the gray areas of FERPA since it was passed in the 70's by calling the "honor code" part of students educational record. This allows them to continue to enforce it while receiving millions in federal grants and federal tuition assistance.

What's worse is the loophole that allows them to give preference to LDS church members in matters of admission and employment while receiving that federal funding.

I actually think it's kinda admirable that a school is sticking by its rules and taking the offense seriously for a change. Usually it seems like schools get busted for breaking NCAA rules or trying to sweep things under the rug.

Yes, overall, I think it's a silly rule, but if homeslice wanted to get busy during his college years, he could've gone to any number of secular, free-spirited universities with decent basketball programs. Oh well.

If that is the case, these kinds of restrictions are not only stupid, but most likely questionable legally. If it it is entirely privately funded, they can do what they want.

    1) that premarital sex is restricted is ridiculous
    2) that having been said, it is refreshing a ollege athletic program holds its student-athletes tothe same standards it holds the rest of the student body
    3) If you sign onto a program, and knowing the rules, you choose to break them, you should be punished. "You deposit your seed, your team drops a seed".

Even if it isn't publicly funded restricting sex hardly seems a reasonable restriction for 18 year olds.
