I want to put a superdrive into my ibook. i like the idea of having an internal for ease of travel, and space saving.

I have found this drive, will it work with my ibook?
12" 1ghz G4 ibook

and will i need drivers, IDE adapter? if so where could i get these from??

thanks in advance.....

Pioneer Slim DVD burner Drive DVR-K05L
DVD -R/+R /+RW Write 8x Speed
DVD -RW Write 6x Speed
DVD -/+ DL (Dual Layer and Double Layer) Write 4x Speed
CD-R & CD-RW Write 24x speed
Other Formats Supported CD-R, +R, +RW, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM
OEM pack, Slot loading drive only

IDE adapter is needed when connecting to IDE interface

I went ahead and did the update
the drive is installed on my ibook now, it works great! there was only one minor issue with the install - the tabs on the drive face are different on the DVR-K05 to the apple shipped MATSUSHITA CDRW, so i had to cut two small "bumps" off of the plastic drive window, for it to fit. no big deal though. i didnt install Patch burn, and this is what system profiler shows, under disk burning:

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K05:

Firmware Revision: 1.03
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)
Profile Path: None
Cache: 2000 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: No

some more info

i installed it myself, it took about 3 hours. I downloaded the guide from www.pbfixit.com, brought a TORX 8 screwdriver, an anti static wrist strap, and a phillips head No. 00 and No. 0 screwdriver.
it does void the warranty, but i only had about 3 weeks left on it any way!
check out www.xlr8yourmac.com for lots of other reviews, and help.

some other things ive noticed.....
i burned a DVD-R from disk utility without problems in about 10 mins.
imovie 5 doesnt recognise the drive (if i installed patchburn 4 that would probably fix that - but i would be exporting to idvd anyway!)
and iDVD does not recognise that it is a dual layer burner - although there is a patch here

http://www.hardmac.com/niouzcontenu.php?date=2005-05-26#4090

ive also seen mention on xlr8yourmac that 10.4.3 may fix the iDVD dual layer support.

:D

Thanks for the review BollywooD. Where did you get the drive? This is looking very tempting. :)

I brought it from TechBuy.com.au
ordered it on a monday, it arrived the next day!

yeah im pretty happy with it, backing everything up to CDR/W was getting tedious!
