Apple System Profiler reports a Kernel Version of:
    Darwin Kernel Version 6.1: Fri Sep 6 23:24:34 PDT 2002; root:xnu/xnu-344.2.obj~2/RELEASE_PPC

This RELEASE_PPC is intruiging to me. Of course it is a release version for PPC, that is all Apple uses. Is this an indicator or placeholder for what is to come, when there will be a distinction between a PPC and "Processor-X" version of the Kernel? If there is another thread that delves into this topic, I have missed it and feel free to point me in the right direction.

    Darwin Runs On x86

Darwin, the BSD level kernel layer in OS X is open source and has been available for x86 for as long as OS X has been available. This is not really anything to be surprised about. It's only the layers above the kernel (that really make OS X more than just another Unix) that are not (publically) available on other platforms. Darwin itself is ultra portable and probably compiles on many architectures.
