for all high school grads
Tennessee Gov. William Haslam has proposed that his state use lottery funds to provide high-school graduates with two free years of education at community or technical colleges.

First announced in February, the proposal now appears to be on track for approval having won support from several of Haslem’s Republican colleagues in the state general assembly.

Called “Tennessee Promise,” Haslam’s plan would allow high-school graduates to attend an in state technical or community college without having to pay any tuition or associated fees. The funds would come from newly created endowment using money from the lottery’s reserves.
It’s estimated that the plan would cost about $34 million each year.
now this is something I can completely support, hope it spreads out to more states.:)

EDIT.

I think it's a great idea. I hope the students will have to maintain an acceptable GPA in order to stay in the program.

It's not FREE… It's just paid for by someone else. This is something that liberals just do not understand.
well, the Governor happens to be a republican, and the funds are coming from the state lottery funds. :D

This looks awesome to me. That being said, how do the universities feel about this? Wouldn't this, in theory hurt them? At the same time, it may be possible for Tennessee to take more out of staters, who pay more for education. Could be a win-win.

Your act is wearing very thin, my friend.
Is he no longer welcome because you don't agree with him?

Yeah someone who gambled it away. This isn't the taxpayer paying for it, but someone who willingly gave their money away.

I've got no issue with this.

Where did I say that?

At this point, he provides me with comic relief.

There aren't many states more conservative than Tennessee. Nice try though. Trying to throw out the word "liberal" at everything makes your agenda quite clear.

Even I will say that his constant coming into threads to blame issues on Democrats is getting tiring. Someone got run over? " Liberals fault"

Like the thread about the guy getting beat up in Detroit. Blames Detroit bankruptcy on Democrats, ignoring red states/cities also have their own issues( like poor education in the Southern states). Yes Detroit has had poor governing and lead to its bankruptcy. Yes it was under Democrat control. But don't think for a second the GOP run things any better. Both equally suck.

It's not exclusive to him either. People seem to come here just to act as a balance to PRSI's left bias. Or they treat it as a sports team rivalry and will wave their flag going, " Go Dems/Republicans" and will blame any issue on either party depending on which side they are on.

Georgia has had lottery funded scholarships since 1993. Of course, in Georgia you have to maintain a 3.7 GPA. It's called the HOPE scholarship. It's not free it's just paid for by others. The name of this thread makes it sound like they've found a way to educate without costs.

You might want to check you facts....

Tennessee is most certainly a Republican State and has been for a long time....
I know this.

I was trying to figure out how this is supposedly a liberal thing when it's a Republican governor.

It is generally helpful fro one to read the article before making inane statements.

Libs just can't stand it when Conservatives lead the way down the right path.

It's hard when Dems can't claim to own something...tuff....get over it.

I can't think of many liberals who would turn their nose at a good idea just because it was a conservative that came up with it. Maybe some Democrats, but there's a vast difference between the two words.

Seems interchangeable to you as well...

I wouldn't have any issues with it even if it were payed by our taxes. Hail, I'd rather my tax money be spent on education instead of the war machine. I would be very happy if this trend occurred nation wide. I don't want to live in a nation full of idiots. Lets get this done and spread it to the rest of the nation. We might catch up with the rest of the Free World.

95% of my thread titles are exactly what it is in the link. it avoids duplicate threads & I am not spinning things to suit my views. check the title & then check the link.

while I hate the notion of taxes, I will say that I agree with the bold part.

You're entering Southern Dad territory here. I don't see a post saying it's not a good thing. Please stop with your partisan hackery.

If the community colleges teach statistics and probability, they'll ruin their own revenue source.

Seems unsustainable to me.
