I went to the Best Buy website to check the local stores and some of them showed they had the 64GB 3G iPad in stock. I started calling around and they all said they were sold out. In fact, one store has a waiting list with over 75 people. I called another store and they also told me they didn't have the 64GB 3G in stock. Thenk I told them the website shows they do. The person put me on hold and whadayaknow, they had 5 of them. Funny thing is that she was telling everyone all day they didn't have any in stock. So, I can finally pick up one and she had one on hold for someone else who called at the same time.

So, if anyone's going to call BB, let them know the website shows they have them in stock, because they may not know.

Maybe a little bit more communication between stock control and front line staff is required at best buy!

Pretty sure this goes without saying and yet, it's been said before. Communication between staff and say inventory will never happen at a place like Best Buy. If it is not in front of those kids then it doesn't exist. Being an informed shopper is key.

It could also be that a shipment came in shortly before you called that the sales person was not aware of - not that neglecting to check the inventory in the computer is excusable. Having said that, I have checked inventory online before, gone to the store, only to have the item out of stock. This happened twice to me so I don't really trust their inventory counts anyway.

Damn! The online inventory checker for 23rd and 6th in NYC said they had 32/64GB 3G's in stock, the sales guy on the phone said they didn't, and now the website says they've sold out too. I bet they bloody did have them as well!

I don't think that the BB website shows stock in real time.

what time would it be shown in? Fake time?

Of course it is real time, otherwise what would be the point?

I dont care that you had it in stock 2 hours ago, I wanna know if it is in stock now.

Suspicious...

Hm, are you sure that you are not the guy who posted some nasty things a bit earlier? Pictures, death threats and the like...

Gee, On another thread I mentioned that my BB had a slew of iPad's in stock and another poster said that the BB website showed they were out of stock and basically said I was full of BS. Bottom line, don't trust their website. Oh, and by the way my BB still has a few iPad's left, and that ain't no BS.

The Best Buys within 30 miles of me (3 or 4) are listed as having iPads in stock but if you actually visit them, you find out they don't have any because they're not authorized by Apple to sell them. I'm not sure which is worse.

I don't think it's real time either. Most of the stores had waiting lists, so yeah, they were sold out even before they were unpacked and inventoried.

The last store i called didn't have a waiting list which is why they weren't sold out. BTW, they only received 5 of the 64GB 3G and nothing else.

What is shown on the website and what is actually in store is not always in sync. For example, I ordered something online from Best Buy using their in-store pickup option (i.e. the website said the store had it) but when I got there it turned out that the item hadn't actually been delivered to the store yet (it wasn't a brand new item on release day or anything like that). It ended up arriving just after I had the time to go to another store and buy it.

The website inventory may not always be kept up to date, but the OP did successfully use it as a hammer to beat the salesclerk into submission. I say job well done.

Picked mine up yesterday.......finally.

Picked mine up yesterday.......finally. The page showed two Best Buys near me (NJ/NYC) received some yesterday (64GB 3G). I called one, the person was clueless, and the other I was lucky to speak to a very good salesperson. They had 8 in stock. Apparently their shipments of iPads come on Tuesdays and Thursdays late morning. None of the Best Buys I visited would "Reserve" iPads. Canceled my other 3 orders at Tekserve, Macmall, and Apple, LOL.

I wanted to share my recent experience after having been unable to find product at either Apple or BestBuy. I had a standing order, placed monday, with Apple for the 16gb wifi iPad. The estimated delivery date was June 2nd, but I was told by an apple sales rep over the phone that this would be the latest day it would ship, and that the order could fill sooner if they were available. I need it no later than May 30th however since I'm giving it as a graduation gift. The next day I read on this forum that Macmall had them in stock, so I called late tuesday night and was pleasantly surprised to hear that they still had them and could ship it that same evening. The retail is the same as Apple's($499). They charged me $15 for fedex 2 day shipping, and no sales tax. Returns for unopened product are handled the same way as Apple, however I'd have to pay for shipping to send it back. This would only happen if someone else decided to give him the same gift and beat me to the punch. I'm ok with this because I figured the money I saved on sales tax would cover the return shipping costs in the event I had to send it back. All in all I was very happy with the service, and even happier to see the package arrive this morning, less than 2 days after placing the order. Followed up by Canceling my order with Apple on-line easy enough. I'm relieved it worked out. This saved me a lot of time and aggravation. Would have ordered it sooner but didn't want to risk being outside the 2 week return window. I would definitely order from MacMall again.

Best buy uses a live inventory list. As goods are checked in at the backdoor it goes live. The girl you spoke to hadn't checked a terminal or would have found that there was stock onhand.

Good to know. Perhaps they considered them all sold if they had a waiting list?

That maybe some of the best advice you can get. I was just at my local Best Buy picking up my pre order of Alan Wake, while I was walking around someone asked about IPads. Salesperson mentioned they got more in today, but only 64GBs were available. In the time it took for me to wander from the Apple area to customer service to pick up my game, two were sold.

The salespeople were also talking about the store having a policy that they will hold an IPad for someone who calls, but only for one hour. Seems on of the IPads was being held for someone and a salesperson wasn't sure what to do for the person standing there wanting one. Sales manager said to sell it to the person standing there because it had been more than an hour since the caller asked for the IPad.

Point being, if you do find a Best Buy that has one in stock, you better be ready to drop everything to go get it.

They store the ipads at the apple table when they drop ship from apple they are wheeled up front. At this point callig and asking a sales operator about stock is pointless. You have to talk to the apple specialist. And I'd check around noon. Most stores only get about 5 64gb 3G s in.
