Oh. I understand endorsements. They all do it. But to get paid for hawking out Omaha Steak on the line of scrimmage for money ? That's a bit too much and actually the NFL shouldn't allow that kind of thing.

I dont think he would ever do that. As much as an endorsement slut as he is, I think he respects the game too much when he is between the white lines to do something like that. Now outside those white lines is a different story like endorsing bud light during a press conference in Coors territory.

I would not be surprised if the SB broadcaster had some sort of audio distortion system at hand, allowing them to garble the field audio just enough to make everything except the zebra's mic unintelligible. It would certainly save them having to worry about coarse language.

Pretty sure they use more cameras and microphones for the SB than other games.

I saw this and it brings up an inevitable issue and draws fascinating comparisons to Elway:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap20...d-peyton-manning-two-iconic-qbs-one-exit-plan

I think if Manning wins the Super Bowl, it would be an Elway-like ride off into the sunset and make a strong argument for best ever QB tag. If he wins he has probably the last on a checklist of three items any "greatest QB of all time" should have which would be multiple Super Bowl wins. He just took the most passing TDs in a single season and most passing yards in a single season so it would complete him. If he wanted to distance himself from the pack of greats like Montana, Brady, and Favre, he could go another year and get most career passing TDs, and two years would most likely have him also get the most career passing yards. If does that, I will eat my hat and even admit Joe Montana has somebody who has surpassed him on any metric the experts look at.

But for most people, if Manning gets that second Super Bowl making him more than just a one time winner, complete with most TD/yards in a season, and a very respectable career TDs/yards behind Favre, I think it's safe to say Manning is the greatest ever in his position. If I wasn't a 49ers fan I would be rooting for Manning just seeing him pull off in football what somebody like Michael Jordan pulled off in basketball or Tiger Woods in golf. A few years ago I honestly though Manning was going to retire for good due to injuries and I never saw this season coming.

As for endorsements, if Manning gets that second win, he deserves all that he gets and if he can pull a Tiger Woods type of fortune from selling stuff, then why not? At least he's not trying to run for governor or Congressman based on his name and then winning only finding out he knows how to do absolutely nothing.

All that being said, if Manning becomes the best of all time or at least of his generation, a title that Brady holds right now, it may be held only shortly because it's possible that Drew Brees can get most TDs/yards in a season and then get a second, or even third Super Bowl victory before it's all over for him. By the time Brees does this, if he does, it's likely Brady*and Manning will already be retired and people will forget those two being the NFL being incredibly fickle. But no matter what Manning, Brady, or Brees do in their remaining career, there's somebody right now in the middle of the pack who is not yet 30 who will make it past age 35, barring injury, who can be in striking distance of records any of those QBs hold right now. The emphasis more on passing these days, which wasn't as evident when the elder statesmen QBs started, will only make their older records quite achievable. The best Manning could do in the short term is to break those last two remaining career Favre records and ride off into the sunset as the greatest of all time, at least for now.

My predictions:

Broncos 31
Patriots 27

49ers 20
Seahawks 17

Who decides what a true fan is?

I sure hope so! I don't care if we beat them by three points, one point, or twenty one points. The Seahawks represent the best team to me, now and all year, and it would be a big win for the Niners. It would help take the sting off of them holding us to three points which is the worst I can recall since before the Montana era. It's not as if the Niners were bad in that loss which we are all still talking about, but that the Seahawks can be that good and often are.

I remember the chest beating this time last year when we had a backup QB continue to do as well as Alex Smith. I think at one time he had 19 pass completions in a row and even a longer streak without an interception. I was pleased to see Kap kept up this type of production after Alex was gone. Even though the Super Bowl was a loss, we almost came back and by no means were manhandled that day. But what Seattle put on us in our loss this season was the most sound beating possible and shook my confidence in the Niner offense. It led me to believe instead of being good and consistent like 2012, we were going to be inconsistent through 2013. Being inconsistent is not what you want, especially in the playoffs. I can't think of any inconsistent team that has gone all the way (maybe the Redskins in SB XXII).

The 2013-14 NFL football season thread

Gotta say whoever wins between Seattle and sf should be sb favorites

ESPN the Magazine has the Dolphins winning the division with an 11-5 record and the Pats second @9-7 and no playoff spot. ???

ESPN = Experiencing Peyote Symptoms Now...?

And the Broncos winning the SB over the Seahawks.

hmmmm...

---------

Who else would win the division. Certainly not the Bills or Jets.

he he he...

----------

he he he.

ya know the pats are going win that division with a 12-4 record.

no matter what anyone sez they will win that division outright.

and the 'Phins are gonna suck.

------

You really think the Pats are going 12-4. They got destroyed by the Lions. They might go 10-6 but not any better. Don't count out the fish. I don't think they will suck like in years past.

No idea what their record ended up as but...

They were pretty good at 12-4 but even if they ended up 10-6 they would have won the division. Their season, as many predicted, is tomorrow against the Broncos and it's always good to see #1 and #2 go at it for the conference.

You should be pleased, 63dot, Seattle is in the middle of its January summer. The sky is clear-ish and calm, it will be nearly 50°F at kick-off tomorrow and probably not drop too much below 40 by the final whistle – not the slopping mess the SAints had to fight through last Saturday. This is ideal weather for football, like a day in late October, and the Niners have their best weapons in good form. The line is Seattle-3.5, which is only half a point above what is considered the typical balance for home-field-advantage, this could be a really close game (they snuffed the "best" team in the NFC last year as well, on the road), you should be optimistic.

That noise thing, though ......

It's the best possible situation we can go into but still facing the best team in the NFL now and all year, and at their home stadium. It's theirs to lose and hopefully they will choke being the favored team. It happened last year when the Niners lost against the Ravens in the SB and the year before when the Patriots lost against the Giants in that SB. Maybe things happen in threes and Seattle will find a way to lose.

In threes? You mean like how SF when to the home field of the best team in the NFC last January and knocked them out of the playoffs? Yeah, this game is about whose luck runs out last.

S.F. 35-17 over the hawks.

Mark my words.

Lynch is listed as "probable".

I see
  • M. Lynch: probable – not injury related
  • –––––
  • M. Crabtree: probable – wrist
  • F. Gore: probable – knee
... amongst others

I can't wait to see something I won't expect. I would be bored, but not shocked, if Seattle and Denver pull off wins by just a few points.

After reading a lot of educated guesses I think for the AFC game, lots of points scored by both but Broncos getting a bit more. Manning will have a great day and Brady may still get 300 yards.

For NFC game, not that high scoring and good displays of defense from both teams with relatively good showings by both quarterbacks. Kap may even throw more than Wilson but overall the day will go to Seattle. I expect at least one key interception by Seattle that may be the pivotal point in the game.

My guesses but let's see how it turns out.

If SF Niners win tomorrow, I will be thrilled but not enough to take away the potentially terrible news that the LA Dodgers made an offer to Japanese ace Masahiro Tanaka in MLB. With Tanaka and Kershaw in dodger blue, the 2014 SF Giants are doomed and will be the biyatch of LA all year. Man, the city by the bay can never catch a break. We win a world series in 2012 only to lose in the super bowl a few months later. We get to NFC championships this year against all odds with Niners only to first give up bidding on Tanaka for SF Giants a month ago and now hear the news that arch rival LA Dodgers are among the teams that made an offer to the Japanese pitcher. I have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach right now. Being into more than one sport guarantees that I can never be happy for long since nobody (save NY or Boston) wins in two or more professional sports in a year.

And you multi-sport fans over in Boston may tack a Super Bowl in a couple of weeks onto your 2013 World Series but may see Tanaka go to the Yankees for 2014.
