Some folks seem to think the 5c is a failure but I disagree. I don't think it was expected to boom like the 5s on Friday.

The 5c is designed for the "iPhone is too expensive" market as well as the younger entry-level crowd that needs something that's cheaper and can withstand a few minor drops. These aren't the folks who stand in line for day-one sales.

I think the sales will trickle in consistently. Apple knows this and is probably withholding their 5c ad campaigns. I think they'll start pushing the 5c aggressively as we approach Christmas. And it will sell.

Mark my words.

5C is not a cheap phone, it's cheapter to make but is basically the same price as an iPhone 5 if it wasn't discontinued, the only difference in price between it and the 5S is about $100 lol

It's a pricing flop, but otherwise a great phone that won't dent/ding/bend.

depends on which market. in the uk, I went to a couple of apple stores this weekend. lots on people gathered around the 5s...the 5c, not so much.

I think they mispriced it by about £50 / $70.

The only difference between your post and "correct information" is yours lacks it. :p

I'm 16 so kinda in the young person category and getting a 5C its the fact I hardly use my phone at the moment rather than the costs so why do I need a fingerprint reading 120FPS shooting phone? I don't! So the 5C will do me nicely. I have my MacBook Air for portability and working out of home.

My take it that the 5c wasn't made to a be a big seller at all! It was made to:

1) Look good in advertisements. It fits the iOS 7 commercial vibe better and the wacky colors of the phones are a good match to the wacky colors of the new OS.
2) Make people who were waiting for a cheaper iPhone stop sitting it out and go buy an iPhone 5s instead.
3) Make the 5s look better in comparison. This coupled with Apple intentionally not allowing 5s pre-orders and deliberately understocking their stores is a huge hype machine for 5s sales (anyone remember the Nintendo Wii?). Not only is it good for the brand, it brings back those huge lines to Apple's stores which media outlets just love covering (these lines were pretty scarce at the iPhone 5 launch).
4) Finally, it's there as an option for certain demographics where pretty colors are a thing.

It's a strategic tool, not a blockbuster.

It is marketed towards the youngsters so it will sell. I think it will sell slightly better than the 4s did when the 5 came out.

Kinda odd that it appeals to me, 38 years old, more than the 5S. Does the 5S appeal to spotty nerds, or the 1% (due to price)? No, it does not. Stop stereotyping.

It's a little creepy to know that you have a hotline to the very insides of my brain and are able to predict what I will think in two years' time. Oh, hang on. You're not. My mistake. You're just another arrogant random internet person who thinks his opinions supersede everyone else's and that he's somehow special.

Grow up, kid.

It remains to be seen regarding pricing. They can always drop the price later. I was a bit surprised they kept the 4S and didn't just introduce an 8GB iPhone 5c for $0 on contract and $450 subsidized. Perhaps next year they'll do that with the 16GB 5c.

Since the 5c is easier to produce, perhaps Apple made a big order upfront so that they had supplies so that they could focus on fine-tuning 5s production once they got a better idea of demand for each model.

It is not cheap looking at all. Gorgeous looking phones in person. Even better than the very heavy Nokia Lumia's.

I said it is marketed towards youngsters. I am not saying non youngsters wouldn't or shouldn't enjoy it. I am just talking about the marketing. They most definitely do not market it to 38 yr old males.

I have the 5s but I really do like the looks of the 5c.
Before the 5c iPhones have been understated and "elegant" colors by design for the same reasons why Henry Ford only made the model-T in black. Look at cars today ... I think the 5c will draw attention in public and will get popular.

The 5C is just a replacement to the 5. Apple couldn't sell the 5 at 550 dollars without hurting their profit margin. So they used a cheaper housing and called it the 5C. It's not meant to be a huge seller.

If my iPhone 5 which is now out of warranty suddenly borked, I would most likely buy a white 5C to replace it. I'm a 30 year old nerd.

I'm probably not in the majority, but make of that what you will :p

It seems the 5C is also aimed toward non-iPhone users or first time smartphone buyers. So it negates most of this forum as it's target demographic.

The brilliant marketing strategy for this thing is that there will be very little cannibalisation from 5S to 5C. It's a new market for Apple. It will provide a great gateway device for up-selling the premium devices to customers 1 or 2 years down the road.

I bet next year iphone 6 comes out and 5c is the lesser phone still and no more 4s. Just a thought....

This post is hilarious and the truth. I am no kid, but I have the 5c (albeit in white) and its a damn good phone. Very very nice and feels great in my hand. Do I have the mentality of a teenager? Nope! I am a grown 31 year old man who prefers to not have to baby a phone like its a child. I have 3 kids so I don't need to be babying my phone. The 5c is great and fast just like the 5 was and is.. It just looks better the. The 5 or 5s IMO.

----------

The truth is this forum represents maybe .5% of the iOS community and .25% o the USA... Not everyone thinks like they do in this forum ... "It's last years "tech", but plastic", "only children and grandmas" will like it. First of a it's stereotypical to say the crap. Second of all Apple had many more of these produced then the 5s for various reasons so of course it can still ship in 24 hours, but believe me it has sold very well...

I agree. I think it's going to sell just fine. It's not marketed towards the buyer that frequent online forums debating the latest and greatest phone. It's marketed towards soccer moms and teenagers. It will be a success. I think it's also more of a long term plan. Next year when it is $0 on contract it will really sell like hotcakes.
