The implications for this are massive, when Brazil finally detaches it will be the last link the United States has over the internet between the largest growth economies of Brazil, India, China and Russia. Not just economical in the sense of $35billion loss to the American economy but also in effectively screening out American security agencies from the respective nations in question.

It's a cold war blockade cyber style.

Perhaps, the NSA snooping was the straw that broke the camels back though. It just means that the old divide between East and West is now a line drawn in the sand on the internet and the dream of a broader American economy across the two American continents seems even more far fetched than it was previously.

The $35 billion loss would be because U.S. companies could become ineligible for Brazilian government contracts, not because the internet is "detached". What would that even mean?

It means that services to provide would be lost. The example already raised is Brazilian email running through its own clients as opposed to Microsoft Outlook.

In regard to detaching their internet it means what it says rather than having its main internet pipeline going through the United States it will now go through Portugal, effectively meaning that Brazilians can bypass having to go through any sites located in the United States what so ever should they choose to.

It's a middle finger salute to US intelligence agencies.

That's not how packet-switching works. Besides, most of the sites the rest of the world wants to visit are hosted in the U.S: Amazon, Google, Facebook, Twitter, the iTunes Store, Kim Kardashian's Selfies, etc.

The rest of the world is both fascinated by and envious of the United States.

    As they should be.

I don't think that many people envy the U.S. anymore. Especially not the educated elite.
