I bought my 8 GB iPod on release day. I was not upset about the $200 price drop like everyone else. I've enjoyed my phone the past 2 + months.

However, my feeling of being comfortable quickly changed. Why?

Many people who purchased long ago even on release date, are getting refunded from some physical stores and the online store.

This is what is wrong, not the price drop. People should be treated equally, unless it was the 14 day window. It is not fair to give some money back and not others. At this point Apple can't even offer a rebate or something because they don't know who has gotten credit and who hasn't.

agreed,

rebates should have been mentioned briefly in the keynote and implemented starting next week or something. Long enough for Apple and AT&T to get their policies straight.

if you purchased yesterday I would agree thats kinda mean but if you've had the phone for 2 months then quit whining. either the price would drop or a better version would come out, its was guaranteed to happen, just a bit sooner than most suspected.

Again, I agreed with you originally. However, people who purchased months ago are getting credited, and that is the unfair bit. It's pick and choose.

#1 - They're keeping track of who'd redeemed credit and who hasn't. Trust me.

#2 - Have you tried calling to request a refund?
I have not called because mine was from a physical store, which I'm several hours from.

I didn't post to whine about mine. Honestly, I'm fine if I never get the $200. I love my phone. I just want everyone to realize it's not fair, for Apple to give some people credits and not others (besides those who are within the 14 day window who are obviously entitled).

In my opinion, they should implement a program now since they have started to treat people differently.

Lets see what they do. Very interesting what has gone on today.

I definitely do not think it's fair to go more than a week. You also have people like me who ordered their iPhones very recently, and haven't even got them yet, who should without question get a rebate.

Big whiny babies. They probably throw their pacifiers and throw up all over the phone. Then they get the refund. I think it is bull. They shouldn't get a cent if they aren't within the 14-day window. Big babies the lot of them.

Most retail stores give you a 30 day price guaranty, why is Apple's so short? It's probably because they NEVER drop the price of a product until they are on clearance to move them out because they have a new model replacing it.

I would be very pissed if anything I bought on release day dropped by a third only after a couple months.

And selectively refunding some, but not all... That just gets me even more. I've already felt a little burned by Apple replacing some units that were damaged by users, and charging me $250 to fix mine.

I am not pissed either about the 200 price drop. I love my iPhone. I bought it on July 7th. However, I am pissed that Apple is picking and choosing who gets the refund (referring to those outside the 14 day return window). I thought I might try so I went to the Irvine and Brea Mall Apple stores...no luck. So now I figure Apple has to respond in some way, even if it's just a press release apologizing for the discrepancy. Regardless, I'm filing a claim with AMEX about this.

I would agree that nobody should get a cent. And people that dropped their phones should not have gotten them replaced free of charge. The FACT is that some people are getting this. Apple either needs to do it for ALL, or NONE. If they do it any different, then they will loose both face, and business.

Completely agree.

One of the more reassuring things about Apple was the fact that when I bought my Notebook, 30" display and such, that the price was the price. A certain security that I didn't have to spend 3 hours on the web trying to smoke out the best deal. There was a certain comfort in that.

The same applies to rebates. My phone is only 24 days old and I would be just as pissed of if some got refunds because they were being whiny b#@%s.

If Apple were to do with the iPhone price drop what they did with Aperture (ecoupons for registered users equal to the price change) or complementary Apple Care for the phone, I would be back in the fold.

For a company that handled the roll out so well, this is a PR sack of crap. Loyalty goes both ways and I feel like they can't be trusted anymore.

Anyone out of their 14 days is NOT ENTITLED to anything from Apple.

And Apple should either give everyone refunds or none at all.

Apple's product lifecycles are absolutely insane, I mean come on 2 months. I have no problem paying a premium for early adoption, but for christ sake give us at least 6 months before you totally turn your nose at the core customers.

Jeez I wish I would have waited :(...... I would have absolutely chosen an iPod touch which includes all of the cool features of the iPhone minus the poor phone features (low speakerphone volume, lame visual voicemail, poor call navigation).

Oh well, I guess Apple continues their legacy of uber short product lifecycles! I'll tell you one thing I will NEVER buy another 1st gen Apple product, EVER!

The original premise of this thread is right - by dealing with a case-by-case basis right now, Apple/ATT has backed itself into dealing with all the phones on an individual basis. A mass rebate would, if the already provided refunds are not tracked, end up double costing several people.

Me? I'm resigned to people who bought their phones being like the people that are getting foreclosed on. Nobody forced them to buy when they did, on the terms they did. Yet, because of the fuss that people make, since everybody likes to blame someone else, someone has to bail them out, be it the government or Apple/ATT. In the end, the people that had the patience and self-control to wait until the market was more appropriate end up with nothing for their efforts.

I don't think Apple owes anyone anything past some reasonable timeframe...(I guess they have a 14 day policy so that's it).

Now, as a PR move, it might make sense for Apple to reward it's early adopters in some way. This "whine and win" approach is more irritating to me than than the sudden price reduction.

I figured that I was SOL on the $200, so I'm not expecting Apple to pony it up... Except that ARE doing such for some people. So, if there is $200 in it for me, then I would not turn it down. I mean, what idiot wouldn't collect $200?

I'll wait to see if Apple actually issues something tomorrow. I suspect that it'll just be a big middle finger, but who knows.

You looked at a product, it had a $599 tag on it. *YOU* decided that having that product in your hand was worth $599. If it wasn't worth it, why did you buy it, if it wasn't worth it, then you should have sold it. Quit complaining.

The problem is I don't think Apple anticipated this. And thus no real official policy. Without that, if you talk to the right person and/or whine enough you are gonna get it. Sure there is the 14-day thing, but with no word on the official stance for the iPhone specifically and people using the receipt postings as "ammo" (as has been said by a few here) I imagine it will be messy until Apple does figure something out. My guess is it will not be a $200 refund but instead a $50 gift card or something like that.

I think the real issue is that the people outside of the 14-day window are fervently trying to get their money back even though they are outside of the window. Responsible, rational people would be honest and take their loss. The Mac community clearly isn't made up of said people.

It is about wanting money back, the OP was complaining that some people got a refund. OK well be happy for the people who got theirs. There is bound to be some confusion when things like this happen, I'm sure by tomorrow or the next day I'm sure they will stick to the 14 day policy. Didnt the same thing happen when Apple had new iPods come out with the school promo going on, some people got the new iPods with the promo others were SOL.
