I know Winterboard is a no go for the 3GS, but I'm sure that's not stopping the intrepid users here at MR from personalizing their iPhones. Post screenshots of your newly freed and newly customized Springboard. 3GS's only! No winterboarding!

You did PurpleRa1n and SSH'd into the phone to manually place the files?

He replaced each apps' Icon.png. It was the theming method pre-summerboard days.

    yeah thats all it is

Yeah thats exactly how its done, after getting into the iPhone through SSH you go to /Applications directory. There you will find all stock apple applications plus cydia and some others I think. Anyway, from there all I did was download some iPhone icon packs, chose the ones I liked the most and replaced them with the originals. The work that is required is changing the icon file names from whatever they are when you download them to icon.png. Then respring and you should see your new icons. There are some slight exceptions such as the camera, photos, and iPod icons that have different names, but they're easy to spot. FYI the four icons on the bottom row are Categories folders, which I added aswell. Finally my Springboard is clean and tidy, I'm sure theres already a how-to thread around here somewhere but I can answer most questions about it. Give it a try and post what you come up with!

Just be careful with app store apps... you can ruin them by using a custom icon. Winterboard is better for those.

you maybe right... i can't say

I can't attest to this, only that I changed my To Do's app icon (from the app store) and it seems to be ok, but like bbplayer said, be careful.

If you mean App Store apps, then, again, maybe. But the stock icons can be changed just fine.

Yes stock apps are fine. The downloaded apps have an integrity check that can fail if you custom icon it.

How quickly do categories folders load on this thing? On the 3G there was a little lag. Also, are the corners of the icons still square?

Yeah theres a little lag (probably less than a 3G can't be sure, way less than my 1st Gen iPod Touch) but its not as bad and is about the same time as it would take to swipe to the last page of a 6 page springboard. I'm particular about organizing my iPhone so its a small price to pay if you ask me...

And unfortunately yes... most of the icons are still squared off and don't look as nice as the springboard, but again, for me its worth it.

Does this check occur during an update? If so, would declining to update keep everything ok?

Ive had apps crash a few hours after changing the icon, without a sync or update. I think its just random? Who knows.
