I get the occasional chain e-mail from this relative of my wife's. His name is Pete. He's a little right-wing. Like Lake Erie is a little bit wet.

Anyway. He's always sending out these hateful e-mails about the horrors of liberalism. You know the type, full of anger and empty of truths.

So I go to fivethirtyeight.com this evening, and I see an entry that is just so well-done, it would make a beautiful chain e-mail to send to Pete for a change. I just had to share it.

And that, folks, is a much more compelling argument than "fear someone."

Nothing about the poor/immigrant/minority/first to go to college Ashley who worked her way to wealth and independence because our democracy has remained the strong country that enabled her to accomplish these tasks. Ashley who would rather work for her legacy than take a handout. Ashley who loves her independence, freedom, rights and responsibilities as an American Citizen.

How do you know that this doesn't apply to any of the three Ashleys above?

And further, is a young person who works hard but then loses their job because they are getting cancer treatment (and can't work) asking for a handout? Is such as person unfree, irresponsible, and lacking independence?

Thank you for posting a chain email you wish you would send to your in-law Pete.

Yeah, that Ashley who ate mustard and relish just wasn't working hard enough. That slacker! She should have worker harder to get her mother a job. Some people expect the government to do everything. I mean, if our government had helped her, our Democracy would have crumbled and she would have never been able to do anything in her life except live on government-provided mustard and relish.

All I know is, is that if Barack Obama is elected, I'm quitting my job immediately so I can get some of those sweet government handouts.

Your implication of course is that such a scenario can only happen under a republican president and of course, only in America.

You're welcome, but I'm sorry that's all you seem to have gotten from it.

Thank you for your concern, but I think we need to keep our focus on Pete.

Nice. This thread is going to hell in a handcart rapidly.

Mods might as well close it now.

Politics bring out the worst in people. Everyone has the right answer, but won't leave their cushy jobs to run for office. So, these professionals screw it up through greed.

Conservative ideals, those which this country was founded, allow for these opportunities. The Welfare State certainly wasn't what the founding fathers had in mind.

Why is what they had in mind important? They're long dead and completely uninformed about the changes the world has seen in the last 200+ years.
