I see lots of posts on here and comments elsewhere about returning the X.

Perhaps buyers remorse when $1k drops out their bank account and they’re not able to do anything new on their phone? Perhaps because it’s the first new shape in a while so people upgrading previously would have more accurate expectations as to what they were getting?

Or perhaps just more moaners for some reason?

Searches for “iPhone return” last peaked in 2014, will be interesting to see if that reaches a new high this year. I wonder how all these returned barely used devices effects Apple, and where do they all go?

Could be several reasons:
  • Form factor change
  • Available display area vs. usable display area
  • Negative experiences with Face ID, Gestures
  • No perceived killer app
  • News about future products: 5.8", 6.1", 6.5"

The general public is probably less likely to accept these UI changes and more likely to return the phone. MacRumors forum posters will probably spend more time adjusting to a product.

You realize this site probably has 0.00000000001% of actual iPhone users, right?

This Is very true. A tech site is not something the average iPhone consumer will frequent, unless they have nobody to turn to for a technical question or looking for general advice. The Majority of iPhone consumers likely keep their devices, unless there defective or they simply just don't like it.

Most people who have an issue with their phone don’t care to come to forums and complain. They’ll just return it. The same way people that like it just enjoy their phone. Everyone here is the minority.

You always have to remember that what you see here is never representative of the general public. People here take their phones VERY seriously, which means they’re the minority that will get up in the middle of the night to place an order, or wait out in the cold for hours, and yes, after all of that return the phone if there’s one thing they don’t like about it.

I know that the worlds population are not on these forums. But they are representative. You could argue that the “fanboys” here are more likely to suffer in silence out of brand loyalty.

Also, I think my original post said I’d observed a number of sources - not just these forums.

I initially considered a return for two reasons:
1. the size of the device, versus my iPhone 7 Plus & 8 Plus
2. the bloody cost. Yes, I know I have a mini computer in my pocket, but still. I paid $1149 + 6% tax + $199. Yeah, let that sink in...(no next, or finance option).

Last night, I asked my missus to decide if I should keep it, etc. She asked me three questions, and the answer was/is yes to all. So, here we are, am keeping it. And, today is my birthday, so, birthday present to myself ;)

Th cost of the iPhone X is something that definitely needs to be justified before somebody purchases it. But if somebody can afford it and truly appreciate the capabilities of the iPhone X, its an amazing device.

The only drawback for me, is I feel the iPhone X is slightly on the small side given that I have been used to the iPhone Plus models the last few years, but even so, that's not even a complaint, it's just An observation.

Happy birthday by the way.

Even if we dismiss the fact that this page isn’t representative of the world as a whole, look at how many people have stated they returned (count) and the. Divide by total users. Even that isn’t a usabke statistic but we may as well go with it if we are using the “chatter” on this page as evidence that a statistically relevant number of people have returned their phones.

Come back with a number. I’m betting it’s lower than 1/100 of a percent

When the 6 and 6 plus launched I remember people returning phones that were too big and going back to 5s. I also remember people switching between the 6 and the plus a few times.

I’d rank the return reasons like this

1) Unecessary UI Changes
2) Value
3) After a week it’s just another iPhone

Happy birthday!

Going forward I’m going to see what the depreciation on this device is. If it drops steeply within one year I’ll likely wait on new phones until there’s some sort of carrier deal going on.

I got $360 out of my 6s Plus which was two years old and needing a new battery. I considered that a decent depreciation. If this phone (mine was $999) is still selling for $700 after a year I’ll have a much easier time justifying the next one assuming there are changes that intrigue me. I skipped the 7 (and 8 if that counts) because I didn’t find the differences justified upgrading.

I think some people secretly want the X to fail as karma on Apple's price gouging. The X is fail-proof/flop-proof though. Not saying this out of Victorian arrogance like people saying the Titanic was unsinkable. Although that was a myth in itself as the Titanic was never marketed as unsinkable.

The only way I see the X will flop is if it's another Note7 debacle again. The Note7 probably had a low defect rate of fiery combustion but never got the benefit of the doubt. I think once it blew up inside the airplane, that was its nail in the coffin. The jeep fire or whatever were all fakes.

Whatever -gate problems an iPhone ever had was never as severe as a random explosion. Even Silicon Valley spoofed it in Season 4. We are going to see issues for any phone. There is no 0.0% defect rate from any manufacturer. Even the Pixel 2 XL issues could be exaggerated and there are like 95% happy owners.

Most forums like this one or Android Central exaggerate issues. I remember selling my ASUS tablet to some Viet college girl and her LG G4 had only bootlooped on her once and everything was perfect after that. But if you go to Android Central, you see folks bemoaning over it. Don't always believe or assume what you read in these forums.

Ordered my X yesterday. Today I was thinking to myself do I really want this. Main reason was the size. Currently on a 7 Plus. I had the 6 previously. Thought the 6 was almost perfect and the Plus is a little uncomfortable. Went to the Verizon store and held the X and thought it was the sweet spot. 12/13 can’t get here quick enough!
