Crazy?

I have a mid 2010 15" MBPro. Pre-retina display, built in superdrive. Full suite of ports. Upgraded the internal drive to a 750 GB 7200 RPM drive. Upgraded the memory to 8 GB. Replaced the power supply at least three times due to cord damage.

It's old. I can't view recent video I took on a GoPro 5 (forget trying to edit). I have to jiggle the magsafe connection to get it to charge. I am starting to back up the computer on a more regular basis because I have had it lock up several times and it most recently failed to find the startup volume on a plane ride home (had to wait several agonizing hours to get home and boot into recovery mode).

Before this computer, I was using a 15" PB G4. I've always opted for the larger screen, and the more powerful processor.

But I find the size of the 12" MacBook very attractive. I'm going to try and travel more, and the thought of trying to use a 15" MBPro on a plane is not pleasant.

And technically, the retina screen would be an upgrade over the screen that I'm currently using. The only attachment I have plugged in to any of the ports on this computer is a wireless mouse adapter, so I'm not sure that going to one USB type C connector would be all that problematic.

As far as I can tell, I should see approximately a 30% CPU performance gain going from the i5 Arrandale processor in my 15" MBPro to the core m3 in the 12" MB.

I like to think that I play games and run an independent software development company off this laptop, but the last game I played was something on my iPhone, the last time I played a game on my Mac was probably WarCraft III, and the small Java and PHP projects I do in my spare time and small and easily managed. Most of my time on my computer is spent on the Internet, in spreadsheets, or helping the kids with their homework.

I might consider the 2017 13" MBPro. If I take the non-touchbar 13" model with the cheapest config and just bump the storage up to 256GB, I'm $188 more than the 12" MB. For an extra pound and slightly larger footprint, I'm getting a 75% jump in CPU performance.

I don't want to spend much more than this because I know that new computers (should) be coming out sometime in the next six months or so.

Thoughts?

Interesting. Just finished reading the thread that started with a review of the non-touchbar 13" MBPro. Is the single fan such an issue?
