Is there anyway to just turn off the monitor on my my new iMac? I'd like to keep the computer running, but shut the monitor off because it's in the bedroom and too bright.

System Preferences...->Energy Saver->Put the display to sleep...
Set it for some reasonable time, and after no activity, the screen will shut off.

Make sure you're careful when you do that - defaults can confuse people and it will set the actual HARD DRIVE to sleep after a certain time... not your goal.
I use the brightness keys on my iBook. But bringing the brightness all the way down on the iMac does not make it 100% black...it just dims it.
My solution was to change the Energy Saver "Turn Off Display" to 1 minute...but for some reason, after going black, it would come back to my desktop every few minutes, then shut off 1 minute later (I did not witness this, this was the report of my wife who was trying to sleep).
