Care to elaborate?
Samsung I believe is doing 85% of the displays for the smaller 17 Pro. From the data, the Samsung displays are the ones most likely to be the best.

The other iPhone models have much lower percentages of Samsung and much higher odds of getting a bad panel.

This kind of tonal shift was happening when PWM switch was used on two iPhone Air GVC panels where I've tried it. It's more pronounced with the lower screen brightness, and to me the difference wasn't as noticeable as that video shows, but I can't be sure if the camera is exaggerating the issue or what brightness level is used in the video. I kind of liked it better in terms of tone when that switch was on, because to my eye, all the Air GVC panels I've seen had a slight green push even when viewed head-on, but again the tonal difference with this switch was only really noticeable at lower brightness levels.
Camera doesn’t exaggerate the issue. It was as you saw it. It’s visible no matter what in low light. Brightness was around 20-30%.

when I toggle PWM top right screen turns purple. IPhone 17 pro(G9P) with True Tone on. Is this normal?
My 17PM does this as well, G9N screen. I recall that the LG panels I had earlier did not exhibit this behavior. It is normal behavior it seems, there's a message alongside that PWM toggle that states that disabling PWM may impact low brightness display performance under certain conditions. It only happens on mine as well when brightness is 20-30%.

This happened on older Chinese phones when this feature began to get implemented on them. They've since figured it out unlike Apple, as I've not seen this behavior in many years until this 17PM. The Pixel 10 Pro XL that I had also had a PWM toggle and the display didn't do this.

Luckily I'm not impacted at all by PWM flicker and never use the toggle.

Let's hope that the Q4 batch is any better.
3 weeks of waiting later, another dud in the mail. This is just stupid. At this point you could tell me that they all come with low-quality GH3s and I'd believe you. Not sure if I wanna bother with another return or just suck it up. Maybe buy a standard Pro instead.

What is wrong with your latest one? Strong green shift?

So, despite all the evidence, still sticking with the old narrative that “Samsung panels are better than LG’s.”

Sorry, what a pain. I'd honestly just keep it as long as the screen is uniform and call it a day.
Sadly that's not the case either. It's actually worse than any of the other ones I've had. I also noticed that the panel has two noticeable bumps near the FaceID array (as if something was pushing against it from underneath), which is what I suspect is making the issue worse. Even looking straight-on, there's a green tint forming around the middle.

I'll give it one more shot with a standard Pro, and get a used iOS26-comptabile on the side so I can at least use my f'ing Apple Watch again just in case that one turns out to be a miss too.

lol, how bad is your gh3!? Wife has a GH3 amd I have a Samsung panel. It’s not much of a difference to be honest. The axis grey tint isn’t as bad ones I’ve seen here. Looks really good for an LG, keeper, maybe we got lucky.

Is it possible to get a 'base' iPhone 17 with a G9N display? Or are all those displays G9Q and, G9P and others?

I wonder if he actually has seen another 17 as the panels are calibrated differently compared to previous iPhone series. Using my GH3 and it looks perfect.

Hi!
I registered to add my data points to the discussion.

I ordered both the 17 Pro and the 17 Pro Max.

I’m coming from an iPhone 12 Pro with one of the worse LG panels. It had a fairly strong green tint when viewed off-axis (though I didn’t have any issues with greenish dark grays). Since I bought it on a carrier contract, getting a replacement would have been quite difficult, so I just kept it.

Now I have both 17 Pros because I couldn’t decide between the 6.3” and 6.9” sizes this time.

Anyway, both panels are much better than the one on my 12 Pro. When viewed straight on, the difference isn’t transformative, but it’s definitely noticeable.

Both displays show no pink shift at all and are perfectly uniform. From my experience with many Samsung phones, their panels often show a slight “rainbow” effect that shifts between greenish and pink tones. Since I didn’t see that here, I initially assumed these were LG panels. Both phones show a very slight green tint off-axis, but it’s much less pronounced than on my 12 Pro.

To my surprise, after checking the hardware IDs, I found that both are Samsung panels — a G9P on the Pro Max and a G9Q on the regular Pro.

The only difference I noticed is that the G9Q (on the regular Pro) has a bit more green tint off-axis, but also slightly deeper dark tones. The gamma seems just a TINY touch darker, but even side by side you really have to look closely at dark gray tones to even notice it — it’s almost imperceptible. Colors and saturation are exactly the same.

Because of the slightly reduced green tint, the G9P on the Pro Max is technically the better screen, but honestly, they’re both excellent and far better than my 12 Pro’s display. Maybe I just got lucky this time, but these two Samsung panels are perfectly fine.

Now I’m still debating whether to keep the Pro or the Pro Max. Even after using both for hours, it’s still a tough decision…

Edit. Just to put the „green tint“ on those samsung panels into perspective - i tried to capture it on photo. It‘s impossible. It‘s simply not visible in any photo.
So I guess the LG panels are WAY worse if I look at the photos here?…

I have another G9P Pro Max, it seems to be really good. No green shift or red shift.

Maybe it is not as contrasty as G9N samples, but i think that helps with uniformity.

Appreciate all the comments. Looks like G9N really seems to be the best often (not always). And G9Q seems to be more rare...

It’s a delusion that the G9N is the best panel: my 17PM with the G9P is better than the 17Pro with the G9N that I tried out for a week.
This. It’s getting ridiculous here, it’s a complete lottery. GVC panels from LG are no better than GH3 and on Samsung side it’s the same thing. I wonder how many non-registered people just browse this forum and read all of this, and then go down the rabbit hole playing the lottery 😂.

Not the case at all. Maybe based on the limited sample size here, but that’s not reality.

My final Air and 17 Pro Max came with a G9Q and G9N respectively; both purchased in mid-October. So they’re definitely out there!

And trust me, they’re worth scouring for. As my original Air with a GVC and 17PM with a GH3 paled in comparison to these. Though the GVC Air was still quite pleasant overall, despite the slight green tint off axis. GH3 PM was utterly horrific in nearly every regard though (dim, washed out, greenish hue even when viewed head on, etc.).

Anecdotally speaking… the G9Q display on my final Air and G9N display on my final 17PM are FAR superior in quality than the GVC and GH3 panels I had originally. So there may at least be some truth to Samsung panels having better quality control than LG panels.

But every batch has winners and duds, so… Though I did find the GVC panel on my original Air to be much higher quality than the GH3 panel on my original 17PM.

Man, how different we all are from each other. Whenever I get the chance to go to an Apple Store, I do, and I check out all the panels across the whole iPhone 17 lineup—so much so that I’ve already been asked twice what I was doing when they saw me with the phone and IODeviceTree open lol.

I still think Samsung panels show oversaturated colors and look unnatural compared to a GVC. There’s something “artificial” about Samsung panels—I couldn’t quite define it, but I don’t like it. Not to mention that more than 60% of the Samsungs I’ve seen have a pink hue or some degree of unevenness.

It doesn’t matter that I’ve been professionally calibrating OLED TVs for years, all opinions are equally valid.

Anyway, like I said, it’s just a matter of personal taste and opinion.

I have no complaints about the display on my 17PM. Seems to have better contrast and more vibrant colors than my 14PM.

Out of curiosity, I checked and found that I have a G9P panel in mine. I’m good with it.

I myself yearn for that punchier look, within reason, so I specifically sought out Samsung panels. Especially since they tend to be slightly warmer too (probably due to that mild pink hue you mention). But you’re so right… It entirely comes down to personal preference.
