Hey there fam,

Been lurking here since I discovered I have a super grainy screen on my 17PM and thought I'd contribute with my two cents.

So, I'm coming after a year of 16PM and decided to upgrade to 17PM. All well, all good, I (un)patiently waited for my order.

Since I never had any issues with my 16PM (visual, I mean, because the phone would do me the wonderful favour of sometimes becoming my personal heater and induction hob, while also the disservice of not being able to touch it during said magnificent times - obviously! You can't touch super hot surfaces, duh), colours, pixel uniformity, brightness, everything was perfect so I didn't bother researching the topic - wasn't even aware of the grain-gate scandal on the Samsung S24 Ultra or the mura effect in general, under a rock I have happily lived until now (they say ignorance is a bliss for a reason).

When my 17PM arrived (512GB, silver), I checked the panel rather superficially at first, but since I still had my 16PM that day, I obviously compared the two, expecting to see at least the same quality - and boy, was I aware I was living the panel privilege with my 16PM.

The screen on the 17PM looked good though, better pixel uniformity, brighter, way better touch sensitivity, a bit warmer colours, a bit more pleasing to the eye. But that was all - because I've noticed a super green tint when I was looking at it even head-on, nevermind from an angle (from an angle, almost the entire screen was green, more than 2/3!), and, even worse, clusters of pixels were adorning it whenever it was white, grey and red. Yes. Clusters of them. At all brightness levels. It was as if the screen was eternally dirty. It was so bad you could see all this magnificent spectacle without even having to bring your nose close to the screen, it was something horrendously comedic. And tragic. A super bad romcom. It also didn't help I had eye strain and headaches after mere minutes of watching stuff on this phone, even with that PWM option.

That's when I started delving on google and that's when I made the discovery of my phone's life - panel lottery was a thing. And that's when I also discovered what panels I had, and lo and behold, the 16PM had the G9N, while the 17PM had the GVC.

Now, I passionately read all 63 pages on this topic and, combining the knowledge I've gathered from here with my personal experience, I can conclude that, while Samsung panels are far from perfect themselves (like I said, the G9N I had on the 16PM had quite big touch sensitivity issues alongside some way too strong colours which always had me lower the brightness quite often), they are the audience's favourite for a reason. Or for a couple of reasons.

1, the issues on LG panels are way too obvious to ignore (I mean, a super visible green tint and clusters of pixels visible to the naked eye are super ostentatiously waving QC issues) compared to Samsung's. It's as if Samsung knows how to hide their panel issues a bit better.

2, while perfect LG panels exist as shown in this thread, they are quite rare. Issues on LG panels tend to be more common, hence the public's bad opinion on them. Samsung also has panels with issues, they just occur more rarely (and are hidden better).

3, could also be because the general consumer is biased and wants warmer, more vivid colours - because we are so used to see ads about OLED technology showcasing pitch perfect blacks and spectacular, detailed colours. On phones, Samsung knows exactly how to capitalise on this - tweaking their amoleds to appeal to this expectation. Samsung basically embeds their panels with the subliminal message that vivid colours = pure tv oled quality. For phone displays, Samsung just rigged the game and plays it better than LG (and quite possibly anyone else on the market).

To conclude, yes, I've returned my 17PM, and yes, while I simply want a panel without grain and minimum tint, I consciously choose to get trapped into Samsung's narrative and wish I'll land one of their panels. I'm a hypocrite just like that. 🙂

Really enjoyed reading your post — it’s refreshing to see someone actually test and describe their own experience rather than just echo what’s said online. You did a great job outlining the differences between the panels, and I think your comments actually reveal something quite telling about both.

You mention that Samsung panels are the audience’s favourite — but also note that they’re tuned to appeal, not necessarily to reproduce colours accurately. That’s precisely the point: Samsung has mastered the art of over-saturation and visual “pop,” creating displays that impress at first glance but don’t always reflect what’s truly accurate or well-calibrated.

By contrast, LG panels, when you get a good one, tend to aim for a more neutral and realistic image — less designed to dazzle, more to represent. Of course, if your LG panel had a visible tint even when viewed head-on, that’s absolutely a reason to return it; no one should settle for a defective screen. But the same should go for anyone with a Samsung panel showing tint or uniformity issues — it’s curious how often people excuse those simply because it’s “a Samsung.”

In the end, your experience actually underlines something valuable: LG’s approach seems less about manipulating perception and more about striving for an honest, accurate display. Meanwhile, Samsung simply plays to the crowd — and wins the popularity contest, not necessarily the colour accuracy one.

I myself yearn for that punchier look, within reason, so I specifically sought out Samsung panels. Especially since they tend to be slightly warmer too (probably due to that mild pink hue you mention). But you’re so right… It entirely comes down to personal preference.
Good for you, sir. Enjoy your iPhone 👍🏼

Yeah! If I were LG, I'd try to at least make sure I don't deliver grainy screens, try to mitigate my panel issues a bit better, and maybe ask Apple to offer some software options for the display, like Samsung had/has, where you can choose how you want your display to be - more vivid or more neutral, regardless of manufacturer. That would mitigate so much of the panel lottery, by far.

After all, I'd personally put the blame on Apple here, they've created the panel lottery by not offering its userbase these display options, which are honestly easy to implement as a mere software update. It's surprising they depend on 3 panel manufacturers yet don't do anything to make sure they mitigate manufacturers' differences at all. They just let us argue with each other every year, let us compile conspiracy theories, hierarchies, and return their phones and let us go through however many units just to grab a decent panel or the manufacturer we want.

It's incredible to me they don't do anything about this, not even inform the public - "hey! So samsung panels have reddish tints and bad pixel uniformity but vivid colours which pop, LG has the best pixel uniformity but neutral colours and possibly grainy screens - don't worry, return your phone only if these things become super ostentatious".

Or simply give us the option to tweak our screens the way we like and boom! No more Samsung vs LG wars.

Simple 😀

This. It’s getting ridiculous here, it’s a complete lottery. GVC panels from LG are no better than GH3 and on Samsung side it’s the same thing. I wonder how many non-registered people just browse this forum and read all of this, and then go down the rabbit hole playing the lottery 😂.

Not the case at all. Maybe based on the limited sample size here, but that’s not reality.
Aren’t BOEs more rare?

So today it happened. After quite a few exchanges I got a G9N panel. I’m currently using a Cosmic Orange unit with a G9P. My 16 Pro also had a G9P. (The left image is the Silver G9N Max, right is Cosmic orange G9P Max). Hard to appreciate the difference but take my word for it.

My G9N is…💩. Kinda shocked. It has a similar green tint when compared to the LG units I’ve been getting again and again (GVC or GH3). It off axis color shifts to worsening green. I was pretty positive I got another LG display with how this one looked, except there is no visible grain to it. Once I check raw-panel I was shocked to find it said G9N. Floored, really. And sad. All this talk of the G9N unicorn and it is significantly worse than my G9P. I will be keeping the G9P and shut my mind up about this from here on out. Lesson… don’t chase a manufacturer. Seriously, don’t. If you like how it looks is all that matters!!!

It must be pointed out that NONE of these panels look as good as my 16 Pro Display from last year or the 15 Pro before that or the 14 Pro. These panels are all trending more and more greenish yellow for the white point.

And if we want to point out the Pros getting all the better displays LOL. The one and only one I got was a BOE panel (J5V), so horrifically grainy, color shifting from pink to green when just hardly moving it. Move your hand even a little bit and it shifts.

APPLE!!!! What are you doing!? These displays are not good! Love, your display obsessed nerd!

What was the issue with the G9P that you decided to buy another unit?

Really nothing. My G9P is 256gb and not enough storage for me it turns out. So I have been trying to find a suitable 1tb. It’s been an impossible feat.

I was also very curious to find how this G9N unicorn differed from G9P. Answer: it’s all a lottery. I got a nice G9P. The G9N wasn’t inevitably better like this forum trends in opinion.

It’s a very lopsided view of this forum: many people, including myself, already debunked this G9N-onsense multiple times here.

Then it’s good that there is one more person verifying that same thing, independent of your conclusion. Or anyone else’s.

“Trends in opinion” doesn’t imply everyone has that view. It displays what I have read in here.

I have no grain on my GVC Silver 17 PM 512. Just a uniform colour and brightness with a hint of green shift in the lower 20% when I tilt the top towards me

Always nice to hear from you on matters like these.
Hope all is well / miss seeing your videos in the YT space :)
..But as the great Jeff Goldblum would say “life uh finds a way”

I’m so friggin happy with my g9n 17pro I am holding tight

While I’m not a fan of the 17pm gh3 exhibiting more dramatic off axis tint I think my wife's phone looks pretty great for an lg overall at normal viewing angles and not having that uneven green blob is a total win considering how hard the panel lottery seems. I wouldn’t dare impose my stringent standards upon her either. It’s good enough every time she passes me her phone I don’t take issue with what I’m seeing on it.

I am curious roughly how many 17pm did you go through to find your Goldilocks? Is this a really bad year to find a good one it seems like it but I’ve been out of the loop for this grueling matter and just gotten relatively lucky. Got a not great 16 pro last year, did not like the battery life on it either and quickly moved onto 16plus and was fine with the one I had for that.

I consider myself very lucky to strike gold on first 17 pro (to my eyes) after returning my gvc air that seemed above average but still not totally satisfying and I couldn’t get on with the air. I am not at all blind to how ugly it is out there with panel lottery to find a good unit.

So interesting you got a j5v pro would love to see more detailed photos on that one as another data point but you probably already returned it. One user a couple pages back was kind enough to post some pics and said he was fine with his / didn’t appear to have glaring issues.

And people were pooping on gh3 in prior years but the gh3 17pm I’ve seen looks cleaner than I would assume nearly any other gh3 or gvc id stumble across :p and a few others here reporting something similar but of course definitely not universal.

More evidence, as always, to go by your eyes rather than serial since as you said you got a crappy g9n which was heralded as top binned Samsung in prior years. And as @Mick_ag has pointed out countless times a “winner” serial number won’t supercede anything if you have a visibly uneven or messed up display.

For the base series I can confirm that 2 iPhone 17s that we purchased, cannot even go close to last years 16 g9q in terms of overall quality. At the end of the day it’s a screen that we use every day, what should I do with the 120hz if the overall quality is worse. Both 17 are back and we stay with the 16s base…. And weirdly I don’t know if you have noticed but the 16 sounds way louder and crisper and I read this in gsmarena as well that the base 17 is not as loud as the 16… actually it’s really downgrade in terms of speakers … I will have soon a company 17 pro so let’s see there

I also think G9P is the best panel this time round.

No green tint, no red unevenness. Just uniform and neutral

It really depends on. My base G9P was that kind of awful... Went back immediately. Direct green shift while rotating the phone a bit. Never had a display that bad before.

So it's not about the numbers at all...

Oh ****, i thought i saw perfect panel with G9P.

I am thinking could it be something else causing the greenshift?

The ambient light sensor or temp sensor. Besides bright sunlight, my GVC green shift seems to disappear.

My final Air and 17 Pro Max came with a G9Q and G9N respectively; both purchased in mid-October. So they’re definitely out there!

And trust me, they’re worth scouring for. As my original Air with a GVC and 17PM with a GH3 paled in comparison to these. Though the GVC Air was still quite pleasant overall, despite the slight green tint off axis. GH3 PM was utterly horrific in nearly every regard though (dim, washed out, greenish hue even when viewed head on, etc.).
Like I said, I'll give it one more attempt before going with another option altogether. I'll be out of the country for the weekend, maybe I'll have better luck in a store over there. :p

Shame that the Pro Max of all things are cursed with them though. Even now looking back at the 16PM displays still in the store, there's barely any issues on them. Let's hope they can figure out a better supply chain for the 18. (Hah.)
Aren’t BOEs more rare?
Pretty sure BOEs are almost exclusively on Chinese iPhones, but I could be wrong. There seem to be some out there in the wild.

I believe BOE's are making their way back into iPhones in the US but don't quote me on that. As for the panel quality, this one seems perfectly fine. But I'm not turning my phone at angles that I wouldn't typically use it, so who knows.

But I'm not turning my phone at angles that I wouldn't typically use it ...
you don't have to turn iPhone for green tint... my iPhone 17PM GVC lays on the table and I look from the side then green tint i.e. in "off hand use" I regularly see the green tint that way (without turning)...

PS: mine also tints green when looking from the left and right side and very strongly when looking diagonal from its top. I am not "holding it wrong" 😀

How does it look when you look at it straight on?

I’m at a friend’s house, he has an iPhone 13. I just checked which display panel it has, and it’s a GH3. Not bad at all, actually. Pretty decent. He’s got no complaints, though he’s not the kind of person who really pays attention to that sort of thing. Since we were already talking about it, I made a video of my Air GVC. TT on.
