Hey there fam,
Been lurking here since I discovered I have a super grainy screen on my 17PM and thought I'd contribute with my two cents.
So, I'm coming after a year of 16PM and decided to upgrade to 17PM. All well, all good, I (un)patiently waited for my order.
Since I never had any issues with my 16PM (visual, I mean, because the phone would do me the wonderful favour of sometimes becoming my personal heater and induction hob, while also the disservice of not being able to touch it during said magnificent times - obviously! You can't touch super hot surfaces, duh), colours, pixel uniformity, brightness, everything was perfect so I didn't bother researching the topic - wasn't even aware of the grain-gate scandal on the Samsung S24 Ultra or the mura effect in general, under a rock I have happily lived until now (they say ignorance is a bliss for a reason).
When my 17PM arrived (512GB, silver), I checked the panel rather superficially at first, but since I still had my 16PM that day, I obviously compared the two, expecting to see at least the same quality - and boy, was I aware I was living the panel privilege with my 16PM.
The screen on the 17PM looked good though, better pixel uniformity, brighter, way better touch sensitivity, a bit warmer colours, a bit more pleasing to the eye. But that was all - because I've noticed a super green tint when I was looking at it even head-on, nevermind from an angle (from an angle, almost the entire screen was green, more than 2/3!), and, even worse, clusters of pixels were adorning it whenever it was white, grey and red. Yes. Clusters of them. At all brightness levels. It was as if the screen was eternally dirty. It was so bad you could see all this magnificent spectacle without even having to bring your nose close to the screen, it was something horrendously comedic. And tragic. A super bad romcom. It also didn't help I had eye strain and headaches after mere minutes of watching stuff on this phone, even with that PWM option.
That's when I started delving on google and that's when I made the discovery of my phone's life - panel lottery was a thing. And that's when I also discovered what panels I had, and lo and behold, the 16PM had the G9N, while the 17PM had the GVC.
Now, I passionately read all 63 pages on this topic and, combining the knowledge I've gathered from here with my personal experience, I can conclude that, while Samsung panels are far from perfect themselves (like I said, the G9N I had on the 16PM had quite big touch sensitivity issues alongside some way too strong colours which always had me lower the brightness quite often), they are the audience's favourite for a reason. Or for a couple of reasons.
1, the issues on LG panels are way too obvious to ignore (I mean, a super visible green tint and clusters of pixels visible to the naked eye are super ostentatiously waving QC issues) compared to Samsung's. It's as if Samsung knows how to hide their panel issues a bit better.
2, while perfect LG panels exist as shown in this thread, they are quite rare. Issues on LG panels tend to be more common, hence the public's bad opinion on them. Samsung also has panels with issues, they just occur more rarely (and are hidden better).
3, could also be because the general consumer is biased and wants warmer, more vivid colours - because we are so used to see ads about OLED technology showcasing pitch perfect blacks and spectacular, detailed colours. On phones, Samsung knows exactly how to capitalise on this - tweaking their amoleds to appeal to this expectation. Samsung basically embeds their panels with the subliminal message that vivid colours = pure tv oled quality. For phone displays, Samsung just rigged the game and plays it better than LG (and quite possibly anyone else on the market).
To conclude, yes, I've returned my 17PM, and yes, while I simply want a panel without grain and minimum tint, I consciously choose to get trapped into Samsung's narrative and wish I'll land one of their panels. I'm a hypocrite just like that. 🙂
