I suppose I’d ask myself if I was getting frustrated with the m1. Are there things you wish were faster?

I was on the verge of buying because…..well….new shiny stuff!! But I use my Mac for uni work (essays and research), my day job (running Microsoft remote desktop) and some fairly light music production if I get a minute.

Eventually I figured there will be zero real benefit in me upgrading. They look like amazing machines but they’re not really aimed at me.

Did you actually see benefits with your workloads? Or not really?

Yes.

M1 Pro is twice as fast as M1 at exporting photos in Capture One Pro to me. Navigating, scrolling my larger collections, and making edits are much faster as well.
Also it's a lot faster for compiling code.
Also it runs Fusion 360 with ease.
Also I can actually play StarCraft 2 at 4K all medium settings without framerate taking a nose dive.
Also I can run REW with more than 10 data points now without the whole thing slowing to a crawl.

Best of all, I have been able to do all of the above in Low Power Mode and they are still faster than the M1 MacBook Pro 13".

I was getting 15-16 hours of use out of the 13" Pro. Now I'm getting 12-14 hours with the 14". Honestly, not that big of a loss.

No regrets. I had a 16” intel i9, then moved to a 13” MBP M1, and now back to a 16” M1 Max. I missed the larger screen and the max is just incredibly fast.
As far as battery life my M1 wasn’t that great tbh with MS teams and video calls. The Max isn’t that much better so I’m getting about 8 hours. Though I’m usually plugged in or near an outlet wherever I am.
Traveling will suck but that’s pretty infrequent given Covid.

I haven't upgraded from regular M1, however with the life I am getting out of the M1 Pro combined with fast charge I do not see life ever being an issue.

to get the thing to drain within 4-5 hours you're really going to need to push it. and you can get 50% of a charge in half an hour with fast charge.

Fast charge is a huge benefit imho. Break for lunch, put the machine on charge for 30 minutes and you're going to be good even if you run the thing down to ~50% by lunch....

Thanks for your replies. I am still debating if I should upgrade and am considering a leasing option with Apple so I can pay a monthly fee instead of a big sum at once and change the computer every 3 years.
