NOBODY is paying $30 a month for an $1100 XS Max. Assuming a regular 24 month contract, thats $45 per month interest free (subsidy long gone these days) - possibly a little more with tax. Thats 50% more than he is stating.

Their own iUP program is $54 for the XS max, and $50 for the XS.

I completely agree that is why it was created, but most people in the US bought it because of the size.

Apple has said the SE was much more popular than they expected, but considering how much cheaper it was compared to the 6, I believe the $250 lower price had as much to do with it considering how popular the 6 and (especially the) 6 Plus were, showing a majority of iOS users wanted a larger display and were willing to take a larger form factor to get it. Heck, we saw the same when the iPhone 5 launched with a larger screen than previous models.

"The way most people pay for these...they do a deal with a carrier and they pay so much per month, so if you look at even the phone that's priced over $1,000, most people pay $30 a month for it, so that's about $1 a day. And so if you look at it, the phone has replaced your digital camera...it's replaced your video camera, it's replaced your music player, it's replaced all of these different devices. And so arguably the product is really important and we found people want to have the most innovative product available, and...it's not cheap to do that."

This guy absolutely did not mince any words. So he thinks that if something replaces a number of other things, it is okay to charge for the combined total of all those things? :p

Yes, Pocophone does all the MP3, LTE, 4K Video, Dual Camera system etc...with $300....SonyEricsson P990i, iMate 9502 was sold closer to $1000 in 2006 with all of these features and functionalities (except high-resolution display and capacitive touch and other evolutionary upgrades in the camera system etc). Typically, there is no way any technology that offers almost the same after 12-13 years can demand more and more citing evolutionary upgrades as reasons.

Given that less people are on the yearly or every other year upgrade cycle now, I can understand the price and capability of a new highest end iPhone is priced as it is.

Would I like it to be cheaper? Sure. Is it going to be? No. Are there cheaper iphones? Yes, from the Xr down to the now entry level 7.

I agree. People aren't updating phones as often. There could be many reasons, but I suspect a major one is the phone has somewhat matured. There are not great advances being made. That isn't to say that cameras and other components aren't getting better. But there aren't the huge leaps. I'm sure the new iPhone takes spectacular pictures, but so does my SE, especially compared to my old 3G.

So Apple is adjusting. They are selling more services to users and making their phones higher priced with more profit.

But from a consumer perspective I'm not sure how selling people a two year old phone as the moderately priced option is good. I don't mind buying a phone with older and lesser quality components but sell it to me in a 'new' phone model. The SE did just that. And even better it came in a size that I will buy as opposed to what I think are the giant phones they offer now.

Apple has a tendency to sell older devices at prices I find high, sometimes even the same as when first released years ago. I just don't get that. They are making lots of money but I personally find it a bit off-putting.

That definitely sounds like the best option if it’s possible, hopefully someone will be able to get it switched over for you - this is where Apple’s superlative customer support comes into play :)
Yeah, for now I'm just hoping that SE made it. Maybe I could find an old SE for super cheap on CL. I've been holding out hope for an iPhone XE in spring so she can upgrade to that. Would be nice to make it until then. Don't think she's going to put up with this iPhone 5 much longer, lol.

He's just regurgitating talking points from the event like we haven't already heard them

And everyone claps like its the first time they're hearing it..

"why so expensive"

"as it turns out, its your tv, its your camera, its your internet, its your ...."

ugh... we know, tim. we know.

It might also need to be my car, my apartment, my dog, my vacation.

The iPhone 8 is a half-inch taller and a third of an inch wider than the SE - people will adjust.
0.58" and 0.34" might not seem like much, but she was complaining going from the 3.5" iPhone 4 to the 4" iPhone 5 back in 2012 because that one was already stretching out her pants and jutting out slightly. She has tried jamming my phone in her pockets. It doesn't work.

Yes.

The iPhone 4S was the most advanced iPhone they had ever done and cost the same as the iPhone 4.
The iPhone 5 was the most advanced iPhone they had ever done and cost the same as the iPhone 4S.
The iPhone 5S was the most advanced iPhone they had ever done and cost the same as the iPhone 5.

Etc etc

But they released the iPhone X which cost 40% more than the iPhone 7.

Remember that during iPhone 6,6S,7 times Samsung was already releasing OLED devices with the same prices as Apple. So OLED introduction doesn’t justify a 40% price increase.
Its called inflation. Plus it's not just the OLED that's being paid for. It's all that software related to OLED and that facial recognition tech that is also in the phone and the better camera and battery life. YOY iPhone Xs prices arent more expensive than last year. Apple just added a "Max" phone.

Bottom line is this. If you don’t like Apple products for any reason don’t buy them. People are acting as if they have no choice but to buy from Apple. I love their products more than their competition. So, I buy them. If decide I don’t like their products then I will stop buying them.

While I agree, no one is forcing it directly, there's ever increasing peer pressure in our increasingly tech-driven lives. Socially speaking, not having an iPhone has been proven to be a turn-off to those who have iPhones. Not saying people are being forced to fit in but it amazes me how what phone you have can have equal or usually more influence in how someone perceives you as your political or religious choices. Even in the business world I've noticed contracts slipping based on the inability to compensate for not having that close-knit communication available. I don't blame Apple for not offering this to Android because of it's incentive to stick with Apple devices. Can't wait for comments about how this isn't a thing and people don't stick to iPhone's just because of iMessage but I personally can say the turn key uniformity of iOS and the communication ease of iMessage were the only two selling points for why we have them as company phones because everyone else we were dealing with had them, to stay sharp we couldn't get by. Carrying further the fact that the uniformity alone of having iOS between devices and social interaction is the reason why I have iPhone's personally because I'm behind the ball with my Android devices, which I do use daily actually as I find them a better platform for me during my personal time but I need to jump out into the world with an iPhone to keep up with the pack both in my social life and during work because majority rule of who I am friends with have iDevices and it cuts down on think time when media/information/interaction can be sent in great detail consistently through iMessage

Five years from now:

…my boat, my second child, my retirement…

It honestly would be interesting to see a correlation between the price of smartphones and how many children people have, lol.

Im almost positive he was talking about the Xs or Xr.

I watched it. I wonder how much Apple paid ABC for the infomercial? Sales must be slow on the new phones.

It’s brand promotion and public relations combined (ie: part of his job as CEO.) I won’t bother repeating things that have already been posted here numerous times already. I’ll just add that I find it quite laughable, the reasons people are using here to support Cook’s statements. Cognitive dissonance is running rampant in certain circles on these forums.

My first iPhone was the 4s and it was 399 at 32 GB of memory.

Don't forget that was the subsidized cost with the phone carrier building part of the total cost into your phone service for two year. The buy-it-outright unlocked 4s price was $750-850.

With inflation, those 2011 costs are equivalent to $850-950 in 2018 dollars.

The truth is none of us "need" high end smartphones. An Xr will get ALL of us by just fine.

My iphone7 still does everything I need it to so far. Heck, two years ago the only reason I upgraded from the 6 was due to AT&T's offer to pay for the 7 via two years of credits to offset the Next cost.

People have deluded themselves into thinking that a business shouldn't be allowed to service high-end clients because they service lower end clients.
Folks get jealous of things they can't (or struggle to) afford.

Tim Cook is correct. Carriers transitioning from the subsidy model to the monthly payment model allowed Apple and Samsung to blow up phone prices. People in this country (US) buy things by monthly cost and I would venture to say few people actually know the true total cost of the phones they buy. They just see the monthly number. On a 30 month payment plan a $500 price increase equals $16.68 a month. It does not seem like a lot unless you look at the total cost. Most people don't do that and thus they buy a $1200 phone without really realizing it.
