ProRes forcing you into 256GB+ storage?

  • Yes. I want every feature... no compromises.

  • No. I was already needing more than the base 128GB. ProRes made no impact on my desicion.

  • No. I will still get 128GB. I don't need ProRes.

  • I always max out the storage. ProRes or not.

It almost did, but in the end I stuck with 128GB. I’ve been buying 256GB phones for awhile now despite my storage needs being in the ~65GB range for awhile.

I’d convinced myself to go 128 this time around, then when the ProRes announcement came out, I almost switched back to a 256GB. I realized I would never use that feature and stuck with my plan to save $100.

The lack of any additional money when trading in my 256GB 12PM to Apple definitely influenced my decision as well.

I'm not gonna spend $100 extra just for one feature that I prolly wont use...its not about the money I can afford it, I just think Apple should've started the Pro series @ 256GB therefore I'm not gonna give their greedy a** an extra $100....

I considered getting 128gb this year until I double checked my usage and remembered I keep everything local on my phone so staying with 256 again :)

Isn’t ProRes intended mainly for people who edit/color grade their videos manually?

I personally won’t be doing that. The standard 4k60 HDR recording looks great to me — I really don’t think ProRes would benefit me personally… so I went with 128gb and iCloud

I used to to that, about 130GB of data. Then I enabled photos to iCloud optimise and it dropped to 36GB. I went back to 128GB. But I do have storage anxiety because of it 🙈

I've been running out of space recently (64GB 11 pro already maxed out, can't even update apps) so was leaning towards 256 anyway since its only 100 dollars more and will hold its value better overtime. The prores requirement just sealed the deal for me

I went for the 256 because of the Pro Res, I use it for GoPro so great to be able to use it for my phone also.

didn't even think about pro res specifically..... I have 200gb left on my 512.... gave it some thought and hope that 200 will last me 1-2 years depending on next year's phones.... the majority of my storage is photos and videos. I have every photo from my very first iPhone.... so I hope I didn't shoot myself in the foot by not getting 1TB.....

time will tell....

worst case is I have to get a new phone next year due to storage when I might not really want one because if only incremental changes.....

So . . . what's the real reason? That you "prolly wont use" it or because you don't want to give those "greedy" SOBs an extra $100? Apple, like any business, exists to maximize their profits. That's not "greed". Truly greedy businesses don't last because they price themselves out of their target market. The people who truly want this feature will pay. You obviously aren't gung-ho about the feature to begin with, so you're not really Apple's target market for that particular phone configuration anyway. Sounds like you just wanted "icing on the cake" with the configuration you ARE buying, and are upset that Apple hasn't decided to give you that icing ;)

Reason is both ;)

If I was even close to needing more than 128GB I would have used ProRes as a partial justification. But I’m not, and I don’t record many videos, so I stuck with 128.

I bought purely because of financial reasons. Cost me cheaper than what i was paying on my current contract plus will get more resale value next year.

Coming from 64gb which is about full in a three year phone, I was debating, and ProRes pushed me over the edge, even though I'm not sure I'll use it. Good move, Apple. lol

Pro Raw photography was my decision for getting the larger storage option.

Seems like a gimmik this time around. I know there are people who use their iPhone to do a lot of video - and you'd think they would benefit from this feature...But, of that group of people, how many also edit their videos with detailed color grading on their iPhone? Because by sticking to the lighting port (instead of implementing Type C like iPad mini) Apple has made the process of getting 4K pro-res video files out of your iphone and onto your computer a painfully slow proposition. I just don't see it. I wouldn't want to airdrop 100+ GB from my phone to my mac or iPad either...

Therefore, I ordered base 128GB 13pro. If there seemed a practical way to use this feature I might have gone for 256. I use iCloud Family plan so no need for a ton of local storage outside of big local video files.

I only use 50 of 64GB on my iPhone 8 Plus (Yes, I know, I KNOW but I’ve tried every other iPhone since then and couldn’t make the jump) so the 128 GB would have been fine for me, but I figured I might use the ProRes video and certainly more of the ProRaw photo capability (that isn’t limited by the HW or SW, but still uses more storage space) and i figured that in the next couple years the saleability would be better with the 256GB version regardless.

something also tells me the 256GB might have a slight performance bump to the 128GB chips, but who ever really drives their Bugatti veyron 256MPH anyway.

Apple should have never put people into this position in the first place, by not making 256 GB as the base storage for the Pro models.
