Knowing full well the age and limitations of the system in question, I asked the following of HighPoint's arduous-to-login-to-and-tedious-to-post-on "support" forum, regarding Online Capacity Expansion (when adding more/larger drives) for my RAID:
Again, I'm well aware of what I'm asking about. Sure, I could go out and buy a 2006 Mac Pro or newer and gain this fraction of extra functionality. But the G5 doesn't cost me anything and is way more than adequate for a home media server. Nevertheless, the super-helpful answer I got was:
Well, no *****, Sherlock. The entire reason I asked was in case there was no technical reason NOT to include 10.5/PPC when compiling their tiny WebGUI program, then maybe they could consider including. I guess that's just outlandish.
Anyway, I wondered if anybody had a similar arrangement and had come up w/ any clever workarounds for expanding their RAID or found other versions or ways to run this newer WebGUI version on a G5. My details are pretty well specified in the quote, but here's the summary:
Power Mac G5/2.3GHz DC
Mac OS X Server 10.5.8
RocketRAID 622
TowerRAID TR4M(-B)P
3 x 1TB HDs in RAID5
Any suggestions or similar experiences?
Thx,
Fred
I have just recently employed a RocketRAID 622 PCIe card in a Power Mac G5 media server that's running Mac OS X 10.5.8. So far, it is working great. I was pleasantly surprised that the disks I installed in the connected TowerRAID simply showed up w/ nothing more than running the installer. So, I then created a RAID5, which also is working well.
One thing I would like to have, though, is the ability to expand this array. I see that the current v2.6.8 of the Mac WebGUI software allows the OCE/ORLM function. Just for fun, I tried installing this, but the WebGUI wouldn't come up, and I received errors in the log stating:
2/22/15 10:47:08 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (HPTWebGUIDaemon[24993]) posix_spawnp("/Applications/HPTWEBGUI/Hptsvr/raidman-httpsd", ...): Bad CPU type in executable
Clearly, it is expecting an Intel CPU and finding PowerPC. Is there any chance you can build this as a 10.5-compatible Universal binary, so that my G5 can run it and gain the OCE/ORLM feature?? I have a second, nearly identical G5 Server that I might want to purchase another RR622 for, so this would be doubly useful for me!

The Power Mac G5 is old and we've stopped [supporting] that.
