Just travelled to Germany for a week and brought my US Ipad with me.
Got a Prepaid Sim Card from Deutsche Telekom (Telekom is Apple's partner in Germany) and it worked perfect, data was way faster than in the US (compared to other countries the wireless networks in the US feel like in a 3rd World country, sorry to say that).

Bought the Telekom Xtracard card for about EURO 10.- (9 something)
and switched it with my US ATT card, which took under a minute then all was running fast and fine.

They offer a EURO 4.95.- FLAT FEE per day, called Xtra web'n'walk DayFlat

The EURO 10.- Micro Sim card comes with a EURO 9.- bonus so your first 2 days are paid (day is always midnight-midnight no matter when you start activating it) Card can be recharged at any Telekom store, post office, drugstore, gas station, many ATMs and supermarkets.

There's a 1GB limit per day after which they limit your speed, but even with heavy usage I never reached that.

Overall I'm very happy with this smooth travel experience.
