A truck has crashed into a crowd gathered for France’s Bastille Day fireworks on the seafront of the southern city of Nice, French media have reported.

The local police prefect of Alpes-Maritimes warned of an attack and asked Nice residents to stay indoors, France info radio reported.

“People are running, it’s panic,” a local newspaper journalist from Nice Matin was reported saying. “There is blood, no doubt injuries.”

There are reported to have been several deaths.

Early reports are saying dozens killed. But as always these reports are not necessarily accurate.

Proof that guns aren't needed for mass killings?

    What's the motive?

I haven't seen anything about the driver. Hopefully he/she is in custody and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Allegedly dead. After the truck finally stopped the driver started shooting into the crowd. Then police shot the driver.

Photo from the scene. How old was the driver? Sounds like one of those "I thought I was pressing the brake" cases.

Not to be glib, but at least it wasn't an explosive truck. Curious as to motivations and circumstance. Horrible that it happened, especially on a national holiday. Hopefully casualties are overstated...

Oh, I hadn't heard that. If this is true, sounds like a terrorist attack to me.

    Ugh.

Just... no words. Seriously how can a human have the thought that "I'm going to drive over a bunch of other people with a truck today." and think it's perfectly fine to go ahead and go through with it.

I worry about this planet most days.

Edit: French now saying 60 dead.

Edit: @TintinBeubar had the video. He seems to be on the scene.

Yah. I'd rather worry about global warming than this stuff, I have to say. But I do worry about it. And I don't know how to help someone who's not a terrorist yet decide NOT TO BECOME ONE.

We say education and jobs and so forth, but we also know that some terrorists have come from good homes, had good educations, somehow became advocates of slaughtering innocents.

Some of the issues in France are related to longstanding resentments held by French residents of North African heritage whose ancestors became French citizens as the colonial era ended, but we don't know whether that's relevant to this incident.

We need to have a better pitch than what terrorism recruits are buying into now. We focus on killling them when they strike, or detecting their imminent attacks if we can, but how about trying to move back to the origin of the supply chain, where the new ones are being groomed?

All our vaunted marketing skills and we can't beat a bunch of guys whose early leader was pitching from a cave in Afghanistan and sending out VHS tapes to media? We are paying way to much for a degree in marketing!

My heart goes out to families of those killed in France today.
