This is just silly. Wasn't everything "under the direction of the Nazi Government" in Germany during WWII?

Funny, we're talking about Umberto Eco in the "What book are you reading?" thread in the Community forum!
I remember that article by Eco. Gladly, I didn't live under fascism.

One of the fascist philosophers (Gentile, speaking for Mussolini) averred:

Fascism is for the only liberty which can be a serious thing, the liberty of the state and of the individual in the state. Therefore for the fascist, everything is in the state, and no human or spiritual thing exists, or has any sort of value, outside the state. In this sense fascism is totalitarian, and the fascist state which is the synthesis and unity of every value, interprets, develops and strengthens the entire life of the people.

But the United States is not a fascist entity, and was not constrained by fascist ideology. Consequently individuals could belong to that middle ground between active resistance and full on collaboration. The list of proscribed organizations is a list of collaborators; a list of organizations that made a conscious choice to fight for the Nazis and against the Allies.
