The first step any pre-dictator does is to control the media.
Control the media, control the message, control the people, gain unquestioned support.

Worked for dictators of past, works well for the countries today that now have massive internet firewalls and filtering software that block content to its peasants.

Except in the 1st Amendment US that wont work.

What to do, what to do...?

    Discredit the news!!!

Use direct media (twitter, government web sites, direct email, direct mail, etc) to blast the crowd saying these sources are the only true, correct, factual sources and that all other media is not only second hand, but also twisted to be misleading and even outright fake!

Say something loud enough, often enough, long enough, by various channels and the followers will only believe that single source and even feed on it like milk from their mother.

It is a modern twist on an old idea, but takes to new extreme. I doubt Trump thought it up ("Fake News") as a strategic political policy, but so far it has been effective with the core Trump supporter distrusting any media that it not from Trump, and believing the Trump Tweets as Gospel.

Biased news (to various degrees), totally agree.
Fake? (or even so badly biased to be false) No.

(Talking about the main stream, not the fringe and pop up "news" source)

Is this your empty knee jerk response or do you have some credible sources? Who is your good source for news?
    --- Post Merged, May 3, 2017 ---
Fortunately Trump's efforts to discredit the media has gone as badly as everything else he's tried to accomplish so far.

Trump has not assumed control of the media and frankly the media has discredited themselves time and time again. Trump has also failed thus far at bringing any of his big ideas to reality.

I'm not concerned about him becoming a dictator. I believe in the system.

To begin with, one must be intelligent and competent to become a dictator. Two qualities missing with POTUS.

    No. It's not.

I defy anyone to point out any story in today's New York Times, Chicago Tribune, LA Times. On CBS News or CNN that meets any reasonable definition of "fake news."

The events they report all actually happened.

You can argue that they pay too much attention to events you don't find important: FBI Director Comey's testimony before Congress. The intention of GOP House Members to bring an ACA repeal bill to a vote. Puerto Rico's plan to declare bankruptcy. Etcetera.

    But those events actually happened.

Is there some story out there that is more important? Maybe. Perhaps some scientist in a lab has just created a technology that is going to change the world. Maybe the next Hitler or Stalin entered politics in Rwanda or New Zealand. We don't know that now. But we will. Thanks to the efforts of the mainstream media you seem so fond of slagging off.

The fake news accusation, disinformation tactic, is now the preferred method to deflect the truth used by both Trump and the GOP while liberally deploying their own fake news to keep'm confused. In this way the low information citizens can continue to support the best snake oil they ever bought, and you should buy some too!:rolleyes:

The facts are already out there and published by many different websites. If you would actually take the time to read the Wikileaks emails from the DNC and Podesta, you would realize it is irrefutable that the DNC and the Hillary camp was in collusion with liberal MSM. This is not my opinion, this is FACT. Also we're not just talking favoritism here, where talking about the DNC and the HRC camp giving marching orders to the MSM to run certain narratives during the election. This is deceitful to the American public and that is why so many call them FAKE NEWS. Look it up if you want the truth...

It's not at all unethical to send stories to the politicians you are covering for editing before you publish them.
The media isn't supposed to be the watchdog of the government, they are supposed to be the lap dog of the government.....well, as long as democrats are in power. When the Repubs are in the White House the media gives them the full court press.

Yup, this is why they're "Liberal MSM" fake news. It's like having a referee who is best friends with your opponent and his sister is married to him. There's no way you're going to get a fair chance. Look at how many people in the previous administration has family that was connected to executives on those networks, very disturbing.

So Media is now in support of Reps?
    --- Post Merged, May 4, 2017 ---
And yet conservative media like Fox and NYT are also labeled as Fake.
    --- Post Merged, May 4, 2017 ---
Trump is not differentiating or identifying any specific outlet for most part.
He is pretty board and deep with his Fake News accusations.

They have to, since the majority of news comes from Liberal networks. You've got the majors like FOX, Breitbart, and DrudgeReport. It's all agenda driven, there is no more neutral news anymore. Heck, for a while I had to read news from Europe and Australia on topics in America, because the MSM wouldn't report anything that's not on It's agenda. It's really sad.

Predictions are not Fake or even meant to be intentionally Biased, just Wrong (by both sides).
    Remember when Dewey beat Truman?
Or when Carl Rove predicted a Romney land slide.

BS! He calls out CNN, the NYT and WAPO all the time and like I said earlier, if you took time to read the emails you will see why.

There is still near balanced news in the US (truly non-bais is extremely difficult, the agencies admit to such)
Conversely one cannot be completely certain foreign news is balanced as well.

Of course those you mention and Fox dont hide their bias, which is fair.

Trump calls out anything and anyone who is against him. So you can definitely make the point that this is how a dictator gets going.

Unfortunately that's not the entire picture. The news has been fake for decades. Trump has just brought into the mainstream and even still people defend the major news outlets and further than that, people don't know what's real and what's not.

When you understand technology, and how mass media marketing works you'll quickly understand that this will never change. Put your efforts toward making sure you get real candidates running for POTUS and that the next election doesn't feature a farce that was Hillary vs Donald.

He does occasionally call out some, esp CNN and WAPO, but he uses terms like Fake News far more often, repeats with emphases, without calling out name.

That is the difference, he could say "Fake CNN", "Fictitious MSN", etc,
    instead its Fake News
