Zero tolerance = Zero common sense, those are TOY guns, nice to see kids practicing good trigger discipline even on toy guns.

while I get that people SOMETIMES "need" to sue, I am not a fan of lawsuits.
hope just sitting down talking about it clears things up.

Why do kids find it necessary to try and make a point about guns in a school photo ?

I say meh..but still. What is the purpose ?

I never did, and never will, understand how a student's actions outside of school allows for ANY type of action from the school to take place.

Alas, the shadow of political correctness has blotted out rationality and common sense.

Well if it's bullying or something I would disagree.

    This is ridiculous though.

NOT a school photo, it was posted on THEIR social accounts, not the schools.

While I think suspension is ridiculous, doesn't anybody else find it a little creepy to pose with a gun - even if it's a toy? Weird.

I realise that, and I am not justifying the school's actions, so don't get your knickers in a twist.

Still I cannot imagine what the motivation is. It's like posing for a prom photo with a dead salmon.

The problem wasn't with the photo itself.

The problem was with the caption, which said "Homecoming 2014" and the name of the school. Seeing as the photo was posted right before the kids in question went to the Homecoming dance, it was seen by some viewers of their Facebook pages as a threat.

    An over-reaction?

No doubt. But you need to ask yourself a few questions. Like, if there had been a school shooting after a picture like that was posted, wouldn't you also be blaming the school authorities for ignoring warnings?

And you also have to question the wisdom of posing for, and posting that picture, and then compounding the issue with the caption. If they'd simply posed with their airsoft rifles, there wouldn't have been any problem.

Long term: neither of these kids suffered any lasting problem. Hopefully they will learn a lesson and move on.

    I like guns.

I like people who like guns.

I like people who take pictures of their guns and then go to the prom and gather around the punchbowl to talk about stuff.

    I agree.

Sure, but those are pictures of your daughter doing something she enjoys. I've got pics of my son playing soccer and swimming.

I think that's what strikes me as so odd about these pics. To some extent, I guess one could photograph their kid in formal wear holding a football or baseball glove and it's the same thing, but the fact that they're holding weapons (even if they're air soft replicas) that always gives me a Children of the Corn feeling.

It's just looks creepy and weird to me.

But, the school's administration has clearly lost it's collective mind.

Well in the Seattle case they WERE the same. The kid in Seattle was just crowned homecoming Prince.

AND he posed with a gun before he did the killing.

You never can tell. Even though these were fake guns.

You would feel pretty dumb if one of those kids decided to kill a few students a week from now wouldn't you ?

Lawful activities or pictures of lawful activities outside of school hours/venues should never result in school discipline.

    ----------

Suspending a kid is completely unresponsive if you believe that they pose a real threat. Call the parents or something in that case. Sheesh.
