Today, December 21st, is the first day of winter (for most of the world) and what will you do knowing the world has exactly two years left in its existence? (or realizing that many people think that we just reached what may be a significant milestone with two years until 12/21/12).

Several cultures of antiquity have considered 12/21 to be significant for many reasons, and December 21st, 2012 stands out as very significant just two years from now.

What are you going to do with your life? Are you depressed, or happy, or is this just another day which happens to be two years before 12/21/12?

Do you plan to stay at your same job? Do you want to finish any unfinished business? Is it a good time to take an extended vacation? Do you think this day and most days, including 12/21/12, will just come and go without anything unusual happening?

These ancient cultures didn't use the Gregorian Calendar, so unsurprisingly I'm completely unphased by this nonsense. Watch the "prophecy" get amended to 21/12/2112 on 1st January 2013 :D

The world was also going to end at the conclusion of the 20th. Or jesus was coming back I was never clear on that. What's the next end of the world superstition beyond 2012?

Are you in Australia or New Zealand because it's still Monday the 20th here?

In answer to your question, I think the end of the world stuff is a load of old bollocks.

Maybe in order to understand mankind we have to look at that word itself. MANKIND. Basically, it's made up of two separate words "mank" and "ind." What do these words mean? It's a mystery and that's why so is mankind.

Since I believe the Bible tells us that no one knows, I tend to take those prophecies as the only sure days that the world is NOT going to end. Besides, Jesus comes back and we have a new heaven and a new earth, so nothing really ends anyway. :D

Don't plan on debating this, just stating my beliefs.

This is the happiest time of my life, so I'm trying to remain conscious and appreciate every second. I just want to be sure to never fall back into unconsciousness again.

If chicken little tells you that the sky is fallin'
Even if it was would you still come crawlin'
    Back again
I bet you would my friend

The obvious lunacy of this "prophecy" can be seen by:

    1) Different cultures order the day/month/year components differently: that date is 21/12/12 in the UK ordering and 12/12/21 in the Japanese.

    2) You have chosen to drop digits from the year to make it work. The date in two years time will be 21/12/2012. Which is not a particularly significant looking number. Even if we change it to US date format it's 12/21/2012. Which again looks pretty insignificant. If the USA had existed in 12/21/1221 maybe it would have been interesting.

Special in the way I imagine you'd have to feel to believe such things. People in every generation throughout history have thought they were living in special times. End times. This is nothing more than our small human brains attempting to form another justification for our time in existence, if we're special and living in special times, it helps us cope with the uncertainty of it all.

Ok? Maybe next time try to stray from the interstate a bit. You'll learn a bit more.
In related news, I drove through Pennsylvania, and it's all trees! Arizona and Texas are all desert!
I went to Italy, and it's all just a bunch of tourist traps! Haha...

the date does carry Mystery ... Dec 21, 2012 is the 5th and last of Mayan Calendars that count backwards in 5000+ year cycles. The Calendars have existed for over 25,000 years with remarkable accuracy.

why no 6th Calendar counting back from the year 7025 ???

the year 2012 also coincides with the 11 year Sun Cycle ... and some predict the coming of a Super Solar Flare in 2012 to be as big as the one in 1859.

Super Solar Flares have the capability of disabling major communications ... back in 1859 we had no major communication equipment ... and they predict these Super Solar Flares happen every 150+ years ... we would not have even noticed the one in 1859.
