More unexpected things going on in Iraq.

from a report by The NY Times

Troops leaving early? Going to Afghanistan? I always get a bad feeling when the Bush gang does something unexpected :(

It's all about tripping up Obama. Given the way Obama's been moving to the right lately, it might just work.

This means that we are at the end of the surge, NOT that we have begun a reduction of troops in Iraq. We are still going to be at pre- "surge" levels. The key here is to get as many people to understand this reality as possible. There has been NO reduction in the base troop level in Iraq, merely a end (if it happens) in the surge level. This equates merely to fulfilling a promise that the surge increase would be temporary.

It's called spin baby. No one ever lost a bet underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

The reality of it is that pretty much everyone agrees that we will be in Afghanistan longer than Iraq, and that the draw down in Iraq will coincide with increased ISAF presence in Afghanistan.

So in that sense, Bush moving troops around is unsurprising. It is also unsurprising for him to time the move for political effect.

I noted this in another thread the other day, that it seems like they're wanting to make it seem like we're winning so we can claim some sort of victory or something and leave, even though we haven't really met the goals we originally said we would, and it's the Iraqis who want us out, even though most of our deals keeps falling through.

We need more troops in the 'stans. We have for awhile. Obama has been saying it, as have others before him. McCain is saying it now too, though he acts as if Obama never did, and the media's ok with that for some reason. We're gong to have to pull out of Iraq sometime, especially if we want to surge in Afghanistan. Someone has to do it. Never really thought it would be the Bush admin, but I guess even their hands are tied.
