Out of interest are the uk iPhone 4S model numbers any different? Mine was factory unlocked bought (Although replaced at genius bar) and my friends is locked to O2 but had his replaced as well. We both have the model number MD245B. Is this just the generic replacement number or are the model numbers all the same in the UK (Not dependant on carrier)?

    Good question.

Is it possible to identify the carrier from the model number or is there a utility which can read the carrier information? (iPhone Configuration Utility doesnt show that data)

I think all are the same. Locking is based on the UDID/Serial number of the phone itself, not the model number.
