Tried to install the iOS 4 upgrade today on my iPod Touch 2G and things were going smoothly, albeit taking a bit long.

At the end of the process I got an error saying "An Error Occurred while restoring this ipod (-34)" (screen grab here: http://twitpic.com/1yshie )

I figgured it wouldn't be a big issue so I booted up my iPod to find that no non-app (music, videos, photos, etc) had been synced. Apps appeared to be there but trying to launch any non-default app results in the app crashing before it even loads.

If I plug into iTunes it informs me that the restore hasn't been successful and asks if I'd like to try again, which results in the same error.

I guess I could force a restore but it asks if I want to make a back up first, which I'm hesitant to do as I'm guessing it would erase my backup from iPhone OS 3 which WAS working, and not only that I dont want to lose all my progress/settings in the games/apps I have installed in the past.

Any suggestions?

I guess on the plus side, this time the upgrade was free...

I have a similar issue.

I got error (-402620395)

I downloaded the update at work today (fast internet) and tried to run that update when I got home and got (-3002) error after it finished extracting the update. Restarted computer and got the same thing.

Then I just clicked update and let iTunes download the update (took 40 minutes on my internet, hence downloading at work the first time). The update ran and the backup that people have been complaining about only took about 20 minutes. It ran the update fine, and went to restoring, I figured it would take a while. When I returned to the computer, I found the (-402620395) error. After clicking OK, I saw that my iPod was down from 7 GB to 6.83 GB and had only about 200mb of "other" on it. It is currently re-syncing, I am guessing all game saves and other information will be gone? Prior to the update, I only had 90 mb free.

Will it be possible to run an old restore file now that my ipod has less space than was used by the backup state?

I have exactly the same issue.

"An Error Occurred while restoring this ipod (-34)"

I tried a restore but it just gives the same error.
All non-standard apps crash before loading. It's also impossible to sync any music (syncing apps works though).

Any thoughts?

Now that I am back from dinner, I see that when the iPod resynced, it managed to seemingly have my emails and all the data for the apps (and all the apps). I only tried a few, but they did have everything up to the update.

No music was synced though because my one playlist is slightly larger than the available space on the iPod, so it decided not to sync any of it.

I know this doesn't solve anyone else's problem, but maybe it will give some hope that you can get it back to normal eventually.

I have similar problems right now. My ipod touch is now frozen and wont start. Maybe having it previously jail broken contributed to the problem.

Unable to restore/update 4.0

I tried multiple times updating and restoring my iPod Touch 2G on 2 computers but it doesn't work at all:mad:
I can see the progress bar almost completed on my iPod Touch but it never finishes the update.
Can I have any help please?
Thanks
