Unibody MBP won't fall asleep....maybe due to 10.5.6

So, I was testing the SMC and EFI updates by not turning off my machine for around 5 days. It works perfectly, no more "not waking from sleep" issue.

During the 5 days, I never left the machine to sleep on its own (with the lid open). I just close the lid when ever I want it to sleep.

Today, after installing the 10.5.6 and do the restart. Everything seems to be perfectly fine, except that the machine won't sleep, on its own.

I tried restarting, and changing the sleep settings in the energy saver preference, but still now luck.

The display still sleep, exactly at whatever time I set it to, but the machine just won't.

Also, I already tried leaving the machine idle for 5 hours, but no luck.

I am suspecting that this is probably cause by the 10.5.6

any body has the same issue?

I want to make sure that it's really because of the 10.5.6. before reporting.

Also, I didn't have anything program on at all. Only finder.

i have the exact same problem, but i am still on 10.5.5.

my issue may have been due to having photobooth open, despite no videos being played, although i cant recall offhand if photobooth was open or not so ill have to try again.

when your display is sleeping but the cpu is still on, is your sleep light steady on (not pulsing as with the lid closed)?

yes, the light is steady, and that's how i figured that the machine is still running. When I touch the trackpad, the display just switch on, without prompting for the password. That's how I know my machine is not sleeping.

same. the steady light must be to denote that just the display is sleeping.

ill see if i can report back

alright i tested it again with no applications open at all.

    same result in 10.5.5.

I then updated to 10.5.6 and ran it again. Same situation. Computer will not sleep with the lid open.

does it sleep if you tell it to from the :apple: menu?

Go to Applications ->Utilities -> Console, and then look at system.log on the left. There should be some process that's stopping it from sleeping. I get this with Safari if there's any video windows open...

Yeah it sleeps from the :apple: menu. ill have to take a look t the system log.

Oddly enough, the doorbell rang so I went downstairs to answer, came back ten minutes later, and the computer was sleeping with the lid open. However, it was sleeping prematurely. I have the display set to sleep at 20 minutes, and the CPU to sleep at 30 minutes. It was sleeping in under ten minutes.

So despite having no sleep issues with the lid closed, I've experienced two odd scenarios with the lid open:

    1) Display sleeping but CPU failing to sleep (in both 10.5.5 and 10.5.6)
    2) Display sleeping properly with the lid open, but much earlier than the energy saver settings dictate.

I hope apple comes out with a firmware update soon for these sleep issues.

I downloaded the update last night. Ran the update, but got an error saying my source disc is damaged. Should contact apple for replacement. The update failed and I restarted. Once booted the finder would continuously relaunch and ReportCrash process kept taking 90% of my cpu every time it crashed. Having had this issue before, I logged into my guest account to try and fix it, like it had done before. But the issue persisted into the other account. I change back and the finder doesn't open at all. I try to close the lid to sleep the laptop, but the computer doesn't sleep. I do a complete shut down this time, but upon relaunch: kernel panic straight after the power on. Happens every time the MBP is powered on.

Now I had noticed some strange clicking and whirring sounds coming from the HDD the past couple days and the computer "freezing" for a few seconds each time this sound was heard. So I think the HDD is fried. I boot from the leopard disk to see if the HDD is still there, it is. Try single-user mode, it fails. I try a restore from my Time Machine backup (thank my external HDD, that little bastard) and estimated time is 9 hours. Now I am pretty certain the drive is about to fail, if it hasn't already.

After a few tries and hooking up my Mac Mini for some online research, I try and restore from an older backup. 8. October worked. And here I am.

After all this the computer will not sleep.

I solved my premature sleep problem--I forgot to log out and log back in to save my preferences after changing the respective display/CPU sleep times to 2 and 1 minute(s), for testing purposes. For now things seem to be working fine.

Is your HDD making any noises? Apple should replace it if it's about to fail! If you wanted to try 10.5.6 again, download the combo updater from Apple, rather than using software update...it's a +700MB file, but tends to be more stable...as for the sleep issue, can you take a look at your system.log file and post it up?

Anyone else gotten a Kernel Panic since the update? I had one (none previously, ever, with any mac!) yesterday while I was trying to install a VirtualBox update, along with having Safari open - no major processes...

The HDD hasn't made any noise so far today. This has happened to me before, on an iMac about a year ago. I've also contacted Apple already and they have an open repairshop spot for me and a HDD ready, if need be. I'll paste the Syslog later today, once I have some spare time to reply on here and done some better hardware tests.

what time were you expecting it to sleep?

OHC1 is lid opening IIRC, which is given for a wake reason, but that all looks typical of the system actually sleeping from a lid close?

right, the log start with me opening the lid to wake the machine up.

I'm setting both the display sleep and computer sleep in the energy save preference to 1 minute. After 1 minute past, display would go off, I waited for around 5 minutes, the pulse light is still on, steady.
