Is Apple able to unlock an iPhone 4 (that has run out of the plan) instore? Or does my carrier have to do it? Because I heard the service provider sends some information to Apple and Apple is who actually unlocks it.

Apple does not unlock a carrier locked iphone. You will have to contact your carrier to unlock your iphone 4.

Yes once you request an unlock from your carrier, the carrier will send information to Apple and only then Apple will unlock it.

What I did:

Apple had nothing to do with this process..

AT&T

  • Dial 611 on cell
  • choose the appropriate prompt
  • wait for customer service rep
  • told them I want to unlock my now out of contract phone
  • they confirmed contract status
  • they emailed me a code
  • I connected to itunes
  • hit restore
  • YOUR PHONE HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY UNLOCKED

All in 20-25 minutes
