Last December Samsung released a new service called Unspoil Me in Sweden. It promises to walk you through a hypnosis session online to make you forget your favourite movie or TV show.

Now, I believe that hypnosis works and can be a valuable tool. I even volunteered to be hypnotized at a corporate event once and was surprised on the effect on me. With that in mind, I don't want to test to see if this is a gimmick or not.

Anyone braver than me who has tried it so far? Is it just a sales trick? or did it actually work?

Assuming it does work, what ethics come around this? Seems to me it could be readily abused.

This sounds like a trolling scam. It is not possible to
hypnotize a person over the internet - but even if it
was - what kind of idiots would grant access to sub
conscious impulses to an unknown entity? What if
Samsung planted suggestions to only buy SamSung
products - or buy a new SamSung product every other
day? And then plant a subset that would cause you to
forget the purchase until after the return date had passed?

Don't believe everything you read on the internet (especially around April 1).

Edit to add: Although, it appears that this has been around longer than this week. It's still clearly some sort of prank/fraud.

Heh. I’d love to be able to enjoy a favorite tv show or movie again as if it were the first time.

And of course then I’d annoy everyone around me telling them how great (name of show) was when they’re well aware of it already.

Still, I’ll believe it when I see it.

I think it varies person by person.

Worked on me the one time I tried. I recall being very relaxed, comfortable, at peace with myself, yet still aware of my situation. Reminded me of coming in from a cold winter day and day dreaming by a fire with a hot chocolate. In that state, I was definitely susceptible to suggestions.

The experience surprised me enough that I'm not going to test it with an internet site sponsored by a major corporation.

    Yes, please share.

Agreed. I was once told I could be hypnotized into forgetting every post on a message board I've ever made, crazy!

Anyway, my name is Eric and this is my first post on the MacRumors forum.

A friend of mine years back got hypnotized to stop smoking, and it actually worked. Now it may very well be a placebo effect, believing the hypnosis worked, but you never know.

Yet there are plenty of studies on the subject that show that it does indeed work in many cases as therapy.

Remember, there's a difference between TV show or cartoon hypnosis, and real world hypnosis.

Working "as therapy" doesn't mean the process of hypnotism actually works. Unless these studies shows it works better then therapy and then I'd be impressed.

From my understanding - hypnotism can't make you do things you wouldn't do anyway. It's very much a power of suggestion. But if it's not something you are likely to do in the first place or have a desire doing - then it's not going to MAKE you do it.

Hypnosis doesnt work like that. Iv done hypnosis a few times and actual hypnosis isn't like something you'ed see on some stupid magic show where they make you bark like a dog or some other stupid thing. Hypnotism can't make you do things or forget something, specially not via an app.

The best way to describe doing hypnosis is think about it like how you would drive to work where you zone out in thought and you dont need to think about what turns to make, when to stop, ect. You start from point A and before you realize it you're at point B without really thinking about it. Doing hypnosis feels like that sweet spot between being fully awake and asleep, yet still aware of your surroundings. When you come out of it you feel full recharged. The woman I see makes recordings of the session that I can go back and listen to when ever I need it. It's helped big time with my trading.

As someone who's actually used it for work related help, I can say it's been very helpful.

Would this allow me to forget everything about The Wire so I can watch it again for the first time?

    What is a placebo effect.

Hynotism claims conscious altering states/triggers, I call ********, but if it helps you then go ahead.

I'd love to forget the movie Freddy Got Fingered. I can't believe I sat through that. I was gonna drink to forget it, but hypnotism sounds a little easier on my liver. :)

I can think of a lot of things I'd like to forget, but I'm afraid they would still be there to remind me( Liberals ).

You're getting sleepy, very, very, sleepy, soon you will be sane.:p
