Update for your carrier .... Need advice

For the past couple of days everytime I connect my unlocked 3G iphone to itunes to sync it tells me there is an update for my carrier available which todate I've ignored as I'm not sure what will happen if I accept the update. Does anyone have any advice they can offer (apart from the obvious continue to ignore suggestion), should I accept the update etc and what can I expect to happen if I do.
