Had a very weird issue today, wondering if anyone else had anything similar or knows why it happened.

TL;DR: Today iTunes on my iPhone downloaded 2GB in just 10 minutes via Cellular Data (when I wasn't listening to music). WTF??

Longer version:

We have been having issues with our phones downloading a lot via cellular data. Before about 4 months ago, I would use 3-4GB/month and my wife would use about 1GB/month. This was good, because our plan allows for 4GB/month for each phone (metered separately). But suddenly we were both regularly going over the limit, sometimes several times in one month (after a phone hits 4GB, they charge us $10 and add 2GB). Because of this, at the beginning of our bill cycle (9 days ago) I reset both of the cellular data counters on our phones to see what was using up a lot of data.

I hadn't looked at it much since then (because it has been only a week). Today, I updated my phone to 18.2. After that was complete, I asked it to download and install WatchOS 11.2 (it said it was about 650MB). 30 minutes after that the update was still not done (was in a slow wi-fi area), so I put my watch on and went out for a 20 minute walk.

Note that during the walk I was not listening to anything nor was I browsing. The phone was in my pocket and nothing was playing from it.

About 5 minutes into the walk I got a text alert saying I had used about 75% of my cellular data. This is weird, because again, it is only 9 days into our cycle. So I opened up the Settings app and looked at the data used. I noticed that, among other things, iTunes had used 700MB of data. I thought that was a lot, but I had listened to some music that it might not have downloaded in the past week, so I brushed it off.

About 5 minutes later I get another ding, this time saying 90% of my cellular data had been used. WTF??? I opened the Settings app and noticed that iTunes had jumped from 700MB to 1.7GB!!! About 3 minutes later I get another text message saying 100% of my data had been used, and now iTunes shows as having used 1.99GB of data! I quickly turned off iTunes cellular data.

Sooo... ummm... Why????? Why was iTunes downloading so much data when I wasn't even listening to music? I at first thought that it might have continued to download the WatchOS update and for some reason counted it as iTunes data, but that was only 650MB, nowhere near the 2GB it claims.

Is it possible that all of my music was deleted when I updated to iOS 18.2, and it was just redownloading it for some reason?? What recourse do I have? Can I reach out to AT&T or Apple to get my $10 reduced/refunded?

Thanks for reading and any advice you have.

Matthew

I’m glad you added the screenshot because I had no idea what you were talking about with “iTunes” downloading 🧐 it’s “Music.”

No insight here, I’m afraid.

I'm reminded of an OS update in the past that reset all podcast episodes to unplayed. My wife had her app set to download all episodes, which pegged her mobile data and was running down her battery. It makes me wonder if there was a similar sort of bug involved here. Beyond that, I don't use iTunes and don't download music, so I'm totally ignorant on how it works, except it strikes me as a bug (maybe music was not deleted, exactly, but just got marked as not downloaded, and so it was downloaded again?)

And if it was me, I would assume the carrier isn't going to help, and I would have no idea how to approach Apple.

I'm curious what others think.
