Hi, I'm updating from os X 1.5 to a better os, will everything be erased? should i backup? or is it possible to add the newer os and keep all my stuff?

Thanks!

You should always backup before installing a new OS!

If you choose Archive and Install all your data should be fine, but things can go wrong!

If he's updating from 10.1.5, he may not have Archive and Install.

My iMac came with 10.1 and a 10.2 upgrade disk, which didn't have the Archive and Install capability. I believe that only began with the Jaguar (10.2) full install disk.

One bit of not-always-obvious advice: if you're backing up and you're in multiple-user mode, make sure you log in under each person's name and back up their Home folders.

That's correct. Archive/Install is a wonderful feature, but it started with Jaguar (10.2) full install disk. The upgrade disk does not have this feature.

Off topic comment: Thomas, you're avatar gif is awesome. I followed your evolution and shrinking it down to...12kb's was it? May I ask what applications you used to develop it?
