Would it be worth it to just go from a 10/32 64 GB M1 Max configuration to a base M1 Ultra configuration, since after updating the M1 Max specs the price of the far more powerful M1 Ultra CPU+GPU isn't much more $?

Thoughts?

Some things you do don’t require 20 CPU cores or all those GPU cores. 3D rendering would greatly benefit from all the CPU cores but no Adobe software or office type software could use them all.

If you're putting a 1TB drive in both, then the difference is $1200
That's nearly half the price of the M1 Max - that's more than I could justify to myself for extra power that I will probably never have any need for
Sure, if you max out the drive on the M1 Max then the price is closer to the Ultra... but the Ultra with only 1TTB

Yeah I originally ordered an upgraded max with 32 gpu and 2tb but then changed to base ultra. Felt like the ‘relatively small’ increase in cost made it such a better mac.

If you can afford it and want it, do it. You don’t need to justify anything. You don’t need to explain us anything. I have bought a MacBook Pro M1 Max. People were telling me I don’t need that power. I still bought it and am always super impressed with it. It is a joy to work with.

It even made me take the decision to buy a base Mac Studio, too. So my MBP has 8 more GPU. I don’t mind it. Anyway, if you want it and can afford it, do it.

I consider to buy the base version of the Mac Studio to replace my Mac Pro 5,1. I am however disappointed by the Geekbench GPU score (Metal) 51000 (Max 32c) and 103000 (Ultra 64c) (vs 194000 for an iMac with the best videocard!!!). Also now I have only my computer on my desk, with 6 drives in it. This was handy, I could easily open my MacPro and upgrade. Now there will be several boxes on my desk. I have used the MacPro for 12 years, I think I will use the MacStudio only for six years, so therefore I won't spend extra money for the Ultra. It would be too expensive. I also deeply regret that Apple won't sell the iMac 27 inch anymore.
