Might go some way to explaining US politics, I suppose.

This is extremely surprising in that virtually none of these sales are to the Tea Party.

We're a nation on drugs! Every other commercial on television is about a drug that can bring you out of depression, make your eyelashes longer or make your penis hard. Drug reps push drugs onto to doctors who then push it onto patients. I'll be the first to admit we're a nation of drug addicts.

I agree. The situation described above is hardly unique to antipsychotics.

As described above, it is certainly unique in its prevalence.

Actually, doctors complain that these commercials are aimed at consumers, who then come in demanding that the doctor prescribe the stuff for them. ("Ask your doctor about Hypochondriex!")

A lot of doctors loathe those commercials.

Where did your source get their numbers?

    Another source.

Not much use without sorting by type.

I've practically never taken any legal drugs, so I'm no expert...

Because it's so hard to click on the drug name?

The top three are used to treat high cholesterol, acid reflux and blood clotting.

Two of which your article claims where beaten by antipsychotics.

An antipsychotic doesn't appear on the list until number six.

No, but your source gives only sales by $ value. It isn't really very helpful as a counter to mine.

Explain to me then how your article is using the term 'sales'.

    EDIT:

Thinking more about this, looking at sales totals is probably a flawed method as antipsychotics cost more than, say, cholesterol medication.

    Monthly Costs for Antipsychotics

    Monthly Costs for High Cholesterol

The drug position on the list seems to correlate with the number of ads they run. Scary.

A good reason why direct marketing of prescription drugs to the public shouldn't be allowed (and indeed isn't in many countries). I guess it's another victory of the free market though.

A pill to cure everything with instant results and no foreseeable downside (in the short term). Sounds like the American way to me. :p

One thing I love about watching tv in canada is that I don't see 5,000,000 drug ads on every channel (mostly just the US ones).

You guys are just discovering this fact ? Seriously guys, one of our journalist here in Quebec covered this very subject in 2007, and even he was late to the game of questioning pharmaceuticals and over-prescription of anti-psychotics :

    http://www.cinoche.com/films/quebec-sur-ordonnance/index.html

Ever since the explosion of ADD and ADHD diagnosis's in the early 00s, people here have been very wary of the fact that we're suddenly all "psychotic". Let's face it, this is big bucks, doctors are cheap to buy compared to the revenue they bring in and it's so easy to prescribe a pill vs actually solving a problem or just telling a patient to "get a grip, nothing is wrong with you".

Many other country's actually don't allow for drug advertising on television....I wonder why we do? :roll eyes:

Actually, according to some digging, we and New Zealand are the only industrialized nations in the world that allow for direct to consumer advertising in the drug industry.

Because this is America. And if there is money to be made in some free-market sham, you better believe someone will jump at it. And legislating otherwise would be an attack on business and free-market capitalism, which are awesome.

My favorite ad is the one for the pill that helps you with an over active bladder. One of the side effects…dry mouth. :D

It's not just in the US just recently I had very strong words with my friends fathers GP about giving him (the father ) Haloperidol because one of his daughters thought he might be a bit anxious. After my rant about liquid cosh and the sons in laws verdict (they're both GP's ) he backed off ,imagine giving liquid cosh to a ninety four year old man because he's a bit anxious.,generally speaking his more mentally healthy than I am and he's got the best part of fifty years on me.

It's to NZ eternal shame they allow direct advertising to patients, the US yes I think everyone can see that but NZ FFS.

( by the way that's a good way of selecting a nursing home for aging relatives friends etc,ask to look at their usage of anti-psychotics,they aren't referred to as liquid cosh for nothing [you may need a quack to front for you they are obviously a bit reticent about releasing such info] ).

I agree. It is wrong because average person is not trained. If you noticed they make it seem like anyone can have those issues.
Then they go to the doctor and say I want pill X. If doctor 1 will not right it they will go down the road to another doctor.

Top it off the pharmas bribe doctors way WAY to much.

Pete Seeger is on the phone, (yes, he's still alive at 92), and he wants a royalty cheque from YOU.

Oh, you say he cobbled that together from the Book of Ecclesiastes?

Won't work, it's in the Public Domain due to age. :p
