USB 3.0 FLASH DRIVE

Simply question but from a somewhat simple senior!

I have a MacBook Pro 10.10.4 Mid 2010. I have bought a USB 3.0 Flash Drive on which I want to download movies. I've read on the San Disk info. that my Mac has to have a 3.0 port. Cannot ascertain whether mine has or not.

Can anyone help? Don't want to open package only to find my Mac does not have correct 3.0 port

Your computer only has USB 2.0 ports.
It will only run at 2.0 speeds.

USB 3.0 did not provided on any Macs until mid-2012 models.
Your USB 3.0 flash drive will work fine on your 2010 MBPro, but won't give you USB 3.0 speeds.
It will automatically down-clock to USB 2.0 - no problem.

USB 3 drives runs fine on USB 2 ports, you just won't get the USB 3 speeds.

USB 3 flash drives aren't that much more expensive over USB 2 flash drives.

I just want to add that a USB 2.0 drive is fine for movie playback, I've used them many times. It is, however, very much faster to load a bunch of movies onto a USB 3.0 drive.

hmmm? Not without an actual USB 3.0 port to use. The OP (if you have not read the thread) does not have a Mac with USB 3.0 ports.

- The comment still stands, though. When the OP eventually gets a USB 3.0 enabled machine, the faster flash drive will come in handy.
I have no USB 3.0 machines, yet have purchased several 3.0 (and even 3.1) flash drives and cables.

If your MacBook Pro is 15" model, I think you can use this USB 3.0 ExpressCard adapter to get faster speed with the drive

You can keep the USB3 flashdrive.

Just use it with your existing Mac for now (it will run at USB2 speed).

If you get a new Mac at some point in the future, it will run at faster USB3 speeds.
