Was gifted a $200 Apple Store gift card. Was curious if I could use it to buy AC+ for my iPhone 6. I called the apple care phone number but they said I needed to use an actual credit card. The thing is, when I googled the question someone on reddit said they were able to buy it with the gift card. Apple chat was unhelpful too.

I just don't want to waste a trip to the store to be denied.

They probably ment they needed a credit card to order online, in store should be ok but why not call the store you want to go to directly and ask before you drive over

Yes you can use your Apple gift card to purchase Applecare +. I had like 50 bucks left on my Apple gift card, so Apple sales ran the card, and I just had to pay the remaining balance on my other card.
