I'd like to try and use my 27 inch Mid 2010 iMac as an external monitor. This is a display port version. Right before thunderbolt came out.

I tried connecting it to my Retina laptop via a thunderbolt cable. I was hoping that might work but I couldn't get it to. Do I need a pure displayport cable?

    thanks!

I believe you need a pure mini-displayport cable to accomplish this. A Thunderbolt port is backwards compatible with Mini-Displayport cables but I do not think that a Thunderbolt cable is backwards compatible with a non-Thunderbolt device.

2010 iMac model has no thunderbolt port so a display port cable should be the one you are looking for.

    Thanks!

I was afraid of that but wanted to make sure. Looks like I'll get a mini display port to mini display port cable.
