I have a third generation iPod with the dock (remember? iPods used to come with it?), Firewire cable, and all that. I also have an iPod touch.

I would like to use the iPod touch with the old dock. When I plug it in the iPod Touch seems to think it's charging, but it does not mount in iTunes. I guess for now charging is all I need anyway.

My question is, does plugging the iPod Touch into the old dock ruin the iPod's port or anything? I know Apple changed connectors a few times and I don't want to damage anything.

Thanks!

It should be fine, I use it with my old 3rd gen dock, but I replaced the firewire cable with a USB one, as that's what is required for syncing.

iPod Touch does not support firewire file transfers, only USB 2.0 thats why it will not mount. I dont think it will ruin the iPod though.

I can't see how. The connector has been the same all the way through, and even the pinouts are the same as far as I know.

I use a Universal Dock with the iPod Touch insert and I have no problems with it charging or syncing.

Just to confirm:

3rd Gen uses Firewire.

Firewire:
  • Can charge all newer iPods.
  • Can charge all older iPods.
  • Cannot sync with newer iPods.
  • Can sync all older iPods.

USB:
  • Cannot charge older iPods.
  • Can charge all new iPods.
  • Can sync all older iPods.
  • Can sync all newer iPods.

The differences are:
  • USB can't charge older iPods.
  • Firewire cannot sync with newer iPods.

So, for your answer, yes. You can charge with your old Firewire cable, just not sync.
