" ROME (CNN) – Using strikingly open language, a new Vatican report says the church should welcome and appreciate gays, and offers a solution for divorced and remarried Catholics who want to receive Communion. "

WOW. That pope is a rock star.

The next thing they should come out in support of should be MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION.

    Progress.

Hopefully the Pope can continue along similar lines, and help to gradually remove prejudices, to paraphrase Niels Bohr.

Best thing the Pope can and should do is allow priests to be married.

That would solve a myriad of problems within the Catholic Church.

I think they finally figured out that they can't keep kicking out large groups of their members and survive. Divorced people, really?

And why would you want him back?

I'll wait for your reply before leaping to conclusions.

He didn't change things around. It's a religion, not a social club.
But when you think about it, they always made **** up as they went along. :D

Like any other multinational business, the Catholic Church needs to stay abreast of the zeitgeist or their coffers will rapidly dwindle. Fewer butts in pews means less cash kicked upstairs to Rome.

    Exactly.

So if they make **** up that is on the right side of compassion, civil liberty and equality, why quibble?

    Just enjoy.

If you change your faith around depending on the way the wind blows that day then what's the point of the whole religion-thing? Call me a nostalgic, but I just like the catholic church nice and homophobic as always.

In a legal sense people have a right to whatever stuff they are into.
Noone forces them to join a religion that doesn't go well with that. Just choose a different one.
There isn't exactly a religion shortage. Plenty of flavors available.

Yeah, all those changes the Church tacked on over the centuries really soured me. It's nice to see the Pontiff go back to Jesus' original mission statement: treating your fellow man with compassion.

I liked it back when Jesus showed compassion to everyone, bent a few rules here and there, and put the self-righteous in their place. I missed those days.

Given a blatant homo painted the Sistine chapel all this is is the Catholic church going back to its 16th century self.

I hope not. The sixteenth century self of the Catholic Church was not a pretty one.

This is good news, but not what is on the surface. Sure, it's a win for the LGBT folks, but I think it's a bigger win for the entire human race. This move is big religion flailing to appease as it slowly becomes self-aware of it's growing irrelevancy. I give religion another 50 years or so, except maybe for the isolated, uneducated, or legalistic countries out there.

I just pray (old habit . . . HOPE) that humanity gets through the nonsense, the differences, the prejudices, and emerges as a more mature species. We need to help each other to live the best lives possible, and have planetary and eventually stellar expansion in mind.

Unfortunately, until someone figures out how to monetize that, it will be a long time in coming. Or, until the developed world wakes up and realizes that an economy based on mass consumption is not only non-sustainable but disastrous for humankind.
