Verizon i5 - Keeping Unlimited Data

Correct. This will only work with an older family plan. If you add a line to a single plan, you are forced to upgrade to shared data - no unlimited.

So if I have a single line with unlimited data, i know i can buy a full price ip5.

How about adding a new line and paying full price for the second phone? Will that get me two phones with unlim data?

I'm guessing no..

no...only on the existing unlimited

That's how I kept my unlimited data. You are not using a subsidy on your main line therefore you don't have to give up unlimited. These people who buy the phone at full price are morons. Make sure the phone is activated on the new line first then switched over. Not a cross upgrade

----------

It's the equivalent of you and someone else switching phones. It's super easy and I don't understand how else to explain it. Not to be a jerk, but if you don't understand then that's your fault. Read some books and get smarter

Meh, not worth the hassle of saving like $10/month. The full price works out to be an extra $18.75/month divided over 24 months.

Having a no commitment phone means one can resell it whenever and then use the money to buy another no commitment phone.

I would speak slower and use small words, but since I'm typing, the speaking slower part wouldn't translate well.

Your understanding of my intellectual limitations is so kind and thoughtful.

I'll just read the small words slowly...I'll try not to move my lips while i'm reading. :p

Right now i'm going to look up the word "condescension".

Posted this on the other Verizon loophole thread...hopefully someone can help me!!

I have been reading this forum and trying to figure out how I can keep my unlimited plan but get the new Iphone 5.

Line 1(my line): Smartphone (with unlimited data) able to upgrade 10/7/12
Line 2: "Dumb"phone not able to upgrade till 2/2013
Line 3: "Dumb"phone not able to upgrade till 2/2013

I live chatted with two different Verizon reps and they said two different things!! :(

Can someone please help me!! I would like to upgrade to the iphone 5 on my line but also keep my unlimited data plan!! Thanks in advance everyone!!

Do a cross upgrade. Use your line 1 upgrade on line 2. Activate the iPhone 5 on line 2 and choose a data plan. Switch the already activated iPhone to line 1. Put a dumb phone on line 2 and remove the data plan

So rather than pay $200 upfront and pay a measly $10 extra you'd rather pay $700 upfront? Ok Mr. Moneybags

I just upgraded at low price and retained unlimited data

EDIT: found this link on the matter: https://www.macrumors.com/2012/09/1...tomers-get-5gb-on-lte-before-being-throttled/
AT&T will only do that if you ALREADY have an unlimited plan.

Btw I did add an extra line on my family plan with the iPhone 5. Paid 199 for it. Then I switched the iPhone 5 to my current unlimited data line. I had Verizon add a dummy phone to the new line (verizon added a test phone, I didn't have to buy a dumb phone) and now I'm only paying 10$ a month for the extra line.

you can add a line on an individual unlimited line. the 2nd line will not be unlimited data though.

call me crazy, but if you add a new line right now, with the i5, wont you need to select a data plan, i.e. shared when you activate the phone on the new line?

i dont get how you can just leave the plan/data by itself when you transfer the i5 to your existing unlimited data line. thats like an extra min. $40/month right?

that's where dumb line/phone comes in. if you have old verizon basic phone you can change the plan on the new line by calling verizon. if you don't they can still make it a dumb line to lower the rate of the new line.

yeah but isnt it a requirement you keep the data plan or they penalize you? unless the rules changed from back in the day.

but does that dumb line have a new 2 year agreement even after dropping the data plan?

I can confirm that the cross-upgrade does work.

I upgraded on line XXXX, which used to be unlimited, and they forced me to get a 2GB plan. Then I removed the iPhone 5 from line XXXX and activated it on YYYY which had, and still has, unlimited LTE data.

Hopefully I won't get throttled ;)

you won't. Vzw can't throttle LTE data

Did you actually do this, I have a individual line with Verizon (nationwide talk and text, 450 min unlimited text and data). I have been trying to find someone who had this plan or simialer that has gone all the way through the process of adding an extra line, ordering and receiving the iPH5. Then getting it switched to their ULD line.

Verizon Unlimited = 4GB at 56k modem speeds....everything above that at 14.4 modem speeds....yeah thats worth it!

i did add a line and made it a dumb line. it says eligible for upgrade since i added the line without ordering a phone. i am just trying to see if it will be $9.99. It is $9.99 but the voice plan will need to be changed to Nationwide 700 minutes which is $50 that shares between line just voice. My plan show it's $109.97 before taxes. I have 1000messages on my line and and the UDP. I am still thinking if I should subsidized or not with the new line I added.

I'm guessing no..

i don't think so. the 2nd line that I added has the plan rates they have now like 2gb.. etc

I am not sure what you are saying here, are you saying the Verizon speeds are low.

I agree with 3G being slow, I average about 1 Mbps down, but with LTE ( my area has LTE coverage) the speeds are much higher > 7 Mbps from what I have read.

As far as throttling I have not had any on Verizon 3G but I have heard that some folks have, and for LTE they are currently not throttling.

I went to the Verizon store and the worker outright told me the only way to keep my grandfathered unlimited 3G data plan was to purchase the i5 outright for full price. I know this information to be false, but it seems Verizon is really pushing this. So my question is, how do I keep my unlimited data?
It's not false. This is their new policy. Upgrade at subsidized price and lose unlimited. Purchase at full price with no contract and keep unlimited. However, people have found loopholes to get around this.

2 years ago, I used my mom's upgrade to get my i4. I ordered the phone online through verizon's site, then called them up once it arrived to activate it/switch it over to my line. I was able to keep my unlimited data but granted, there were no shared data plans at this point. Would this still work for getting the i5?
Yes, this is one of those loopholes and will work. You won't get switched over to the new shared data plans unless you specifically ask for it. You are grandfathered on the no-longer-available shared minutes plan.

Let me know how it all works out, I was thinking about going this route but from what I have read it does not work on a individual line.
