My parents finally decided to get smart phones and purchased the 6s in gold and space grey. We gave the apple sales rep all our Verizon info and he said that the new phones will only activate once we open them. We didn't even open the box yet and both their current phones are now deactivated. We were under the impression that the old phones wouldn't deactivate until the NEW iPhones were activated. I noticed the carrier questions were the same on website as in store...social security # and 4 digit pin for your Verizon account.

My concern is when you pre-order: Will it deactivate your current phone for a week until the new iphone X comes in the mail?! That would be awful if you couldn't use your current cell phone for a week!

No. When you pre-order online to be delivered to your house, those are pre-activated, meaning that upon receiving and when you first boot, it will ask you to enter your account info. You still get to use your current phone till your new phone arrives.

Where as when you do it at the Apple store, it automatically activates the sim in the device.
