Wait, I'm on Sprint but need to buy off-contract. T-Mobile only?!

I need to pick up a couple phones off contract but the only options available are a T-Mobile (GSM) version?

1. If it's off contract why is it tied to any carrier?

2. Is this a world phone or are there truely 2 different versions again?
