only in florida would this be legal. I agree on the parents that live by him freaking out. but hey he will warn them before using it. but then again these people voted for these laws so who is really to blame?
Now lets see how this is a good thing.

    http://www.wfla.com/story/27997914/st-pete-man-builds-gun-range-in-yard-neighbors-outraged
The Lakewood Estates neighborhood is filled with families and children. On any given day, you'll see kids climbing trees and playing on swing sets.

That's why news of a residential gun range did not sit well with neighbors.

“I don't know if this idiot is going to start popping off rounds,” said Patrick Leary. “I'm furious.”

Moms and dads are extremely upset after their 21-year-old neighbor, Joseph Carannante, told them he built a homemade gun range.

“I don't want to hurt myself or any neighbors. I don't want to hurt anybody. I just want to use this as my enjoyment,” Carannante told News Channel 8. “I don't want to have to go to a gun range, when I can just go outside my door.”

Carannante wants to fire his 9mm in his St. Petersburg yard, which happens to be just feet away from children. According to St. Petersburg Police, legally he's allowed to do it.

“I wouldn't have done all this if I didn't know the reaction,” Carannante told us, who claims he has all the proper paperwork for his weapon.

He says he will inform neighbors when he intends to fire his gun, which he hopes to do every other weekend.

Residents tell us that's not good enough.

Leary added, “You heard him say, I'll tell the neighbors when I'm getting ready to fire. What, do we gather our children and hide? Ridiculous. C'mon.”

I applaud Mr. Carannante. It isn't every day you meet someone so logical.

I had to check the Google Satellite imagery of the guy's house to confirm, but it's definitely not a safe venture. I thought it was a 'rural' style neighborhood, but his backstop will have someone's yard behind it, no matter what direction he is facing.

I'm pretty sure they can file an injunction and just use the various published documents on how to construct a shooting range (impact area and ricochet area mapping/gridding) to prevent him from doing this.

If he's not violating the law (no matter how insane the law may be) it seems his neighbors have no recourse.

This is just another manifestation of our gun policy.

I've lost the ability to be shocked or angry by what happens with guns in the U.S.

Gun range in the middle of a neighborhood? Why not?

    Sounds like a great idea.

Agreed. The only hope at this point is that our society wises up with time. Until then, this nonsense will continue to occur.

I agree 100%. I hoped my comment about the law being insane would convey that.

Yeah, the neighbors do have a recourse, they could install a 15 foot bullet-proof plexiglass wall around their entire yard.

What do you think I said that was wrong?

I think it's insane that the law would allow someone to install a shooting range in a suburban neighborhood yard. But if the law doesn't prevent it, then what he is proposing is legal and it seems to me that his neighbors may not be able to stop him.

Is there some fatal flaw in my interpretation here?

That is not a shooting range. That is a dumb redneck with a mound of concrete and some pallets. I target shoot frequently but there is no way that this kid's "gun range" is safe.

Also, not the best choice to wear his employer's logo on his shirt while filming a news piece where he should have expected to be demonized.

Yes, there is a fatal flaw. You are basically saying that if there is a crazy law, everyone should move on, its legal by golly.

I'll remember this next time there's a discussion on gay rights, or abortion rights, or any other left/right divide.

How about this...change the fricking law?
