This week, our resident midget has recused himself from posting the weekly off topic thread. As such, I've taken up the position this week.

Chat about what you want. Keep the politics out. This is one of the few threads we get along in. Currently on my mind:

I've come to realize a few things lately. I don't really like bacon. I'll eat it if I have to, but I don't see the point of it. Neither American (streaky bacon for our British friends) or Canadian bacon (similar to what our British friends eat). I don't like it in sandwiches, if it's been cured, I don't like it on pizza, I don't like it plain.

Food cravings. I've had an unusual craving for pizza lately. All I crave is pizza. It reminds me of my university days. Granted it was easier to burn off the extra energy then and there were more independent shops then. For living in such a "Foodie State!," there's not a lot of indy shops here churning out good pizza.

Last but not least, I believe Wednesdays are referred to as "hump days" by younger generations. It's an odd name and not something I heard when I was younger but gained popularity sometime in the late 90s through a resurgence of Steinbeck's writings. Though I believe that apart from it being the middle of the week, more or less, people also use it as a day to have... shall we say, adult charades?

What about pancetta? Do you like pancetta (it can offer a lot to pasta dishes)?

Or, San Daniele, Parma, or Iberico ham? Do you find these on the "bacon dislike' list, too?
    --- Post Merged, May 31, 2017 ---
    Oh, yes.

Risotto - properly made - is brilliant. But you need to pay attention and concentrate when preparing it.

And making sure you have the 'right' sort of rice (Arborio, or Carnaroli) matters with this dish in a way it doesn't with a great many others.

On bacon: This evening's meal will be pasta, bacon (smoked pork cheek), peas, and one or two other ingredients (garlic, onions, cream, stock, perhaps some Parmesan cheese).

Not really, no. I like pork belly rolled up with herbs and roasted. I find pancetta useful to chop and render with garlic and onions. By the time the dish cooks through, the meat and fat combination has no flavor.

Of the various regional hams, I end up making out the flavors of what the hog ate. Don't like the smell and taste at times. If you recall I did buy a certified leg not along ago for a holiday get together. I could only stomach it after a few drinks. I don't enjoy regular cured ham either. Pork leg/whole ham with bone, raw, and then roasted is delicious, though.

Oh, I miss good Pancetta! You should also use some Guanciale in pasta, especially in a carbonara. One thing that I can't find halway decent in the US is deli stuff. Ham here SUCKS, if they sold that stuff in Italy a revolution would start.

As for risotto, arborio all the way, especially when making simple stuff like a milanese (saffron).

You don't really lower cholesterol with food. It's a different type of cholesterol.
    Exercise will help much more.

Yes, I have saffron - good stuff from central Asia.

Now, I hadn't realised that the ham in the US is of such a dismal quality. That is most unfortunate.

I can see some of the arguments made for vegetarianism, but - and this is the main reason I do not plan to become one - if asked whether I would be willing to spend the rest of my life without ever being able to taste and savour Iberico ham, (or pancetta with pasta), again, then, the answer is a resounding no.

I'm not a bacon fan either. I feel like I'm eating leather or something. Not much of a pizza fan either.

I guess I just don't like salty, greasy foods.

Sort of muslimy isn't it, not liking pork. Hey wait a minute, I just had an epiphany.

The Orange One could write EO allowing entry into US only if person eats double order of bacon in front of customs officer. Not halal meat either. Real honest to god er.....mean....alah pork.

Nothing in constitution about eating bacon, and no true terrorist would go against alah and eat bacon. Think about it Donald, this might just pass the judicial branch review.

Reading this thread, that might come down to the poor quality of bacon available inn the States.

Because @yaxomoxay is perfectly right: The quality of bacon and ham available in countries such as Italy (yum), Germany, France, and - obviously - Spain is sensational at best. And the consumers in those countries demand the best - even the ordinary supermarkets stock pretty good quality stuff, let alone the specialist delicatessens.

Exactly. When I buy ham, salami, mortadella, coppa etc from expensive shops here the quality is probably the equivalent of the lower quality you can find in Italy.

I have no complaints against bacon however, I think that thick bacon (not pancetta) is better in the US.

Bummer. Statins aren't too much fun anyway. Admire your discipline with the salads. No life insurance here. When I die it will be a sad day for everybody. ;)

Get the insurance. Ride the bike but not the other thing without all PRSI posters signing off on it.

That kinda makes the insurance superfluous. :)

No discussion of bacon would be complete without:
