Last week was the first competition I've entered for a while and now look where it got me! The topic for this week is STUDY. We've not had this topic before as far as I can see. I'm thinking of pictures of study, studying, or items related to this, or that bring studying to mind. I don't want to be too specific and curb everyone's imagination.

The contest closes at 7am GMT on Saturday 20 February so if you're in the UK or further east you may want to make sure your photo is in by the day before if you want a lie in!

Enjoy!

Standard rules apply.

  • Follow all relevant local laws regarding stay-at-home orders. If you can't go outside, try and take a photo at home or grab one from the archives.
  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced.
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • This contest runs for one week. If in doubt, check the dates in the title.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends at 07.00 GMT on 20 February

It wasn't intended to be hard! Guess we all have our own definition, I can't do sports for example. Hope you get a great idea!
I don't think any of us intend to make it hard. I just think that's just a measure of how this forum has developed. (You can decide if is an intended or unintended pun.)

If anyone's struggling with ideas for this, when I suggested the topic I was thinking I might get photos showing

  1. people studying
  2. text books, either close up or as part of a wider picture or with the items in no.3 below
  3. note books maybe with notes maybe with pen
  4. study environment, desks, rooms etc
  5. with lockdown there is a lot of home-schooling going on. No need to show faces if you'd rather not, close in on hands writing in books or using a keyboard for computer study
  6. if you don't have any of the above, maybe a picture of an animal concentrating hard on something?
Hope this helps! If not, over to you Apple Glen UK! 😁

I need to study the weather. Saw the picture yesterday. Now if the rain will just stop and the sunshine brighten the gloomy day to take a picture.

A few months back, I was taking some bird photos. We were experiencing a fairly long dry spell, and it was a frosty morning. As I was photographing this cardinal. I noticed that he appeared to be eating leaves. It wasn’t until I was editing my results that I noticed that what he was actually doing was cleaning the frost off the leaves as a source of water. I never knew birds would do this.

Obviously a place to study with over 2.5M books in it's 16 stacks, but the building is a study in and of itself. While originally intended to be a library, it was designed and built as a Gothic cathedral, with entry into an open Nave with alter (circulation desk) and entry to the stacks to the rear (pictured). The north and south aisles of the nave with its 60 foot high ceiling are developed as study areas. Confessionals became phone booths. Stained glass windows within the library and the outer cloisters reflected the literature of the various eras.

Just one more day to go so time to get those last minute thoughts in! Competition closes tomorrow at 7am GMT

@WigWag Workshop @schlupps It's easy to forget you're looking at the contest rather than the photo of the day thread, but no likes or comments on the pictures please until the contest is over. Now I'll probably do the same next week!

I was wondering here who was studying hardest, your daughter or the cat! Following your cat's gaze it's probably thinking of pouncing on the end of the pencil :) In this case I'm glad you made it an environmental photo to show that she's at home, it's a lovely take on family life in lockdown to be treasured and I'm glad you shared it with us. As a competition photo it would benefit from a change of angle to avoid the clothes horse and to change where the door handles appear in the picture.

From some years ago. Our son learning to play the saxophone.
I like the way you've closed in on the scene and used a narrow depth of field to focus only on what's relevant, ie. your son learning the saxophone. No need to wonder where he is or anything else, you've concentrated our view on what's important.

I've never heard of this either, thank you for sharing! I'm being anthropomorphic but he looks deep in thought, as though he's really enjoying quenching his thirst. It must have taken a fair amount of study for him to realise the leaves were a good source of water.

Or not studying? Geometry would put anyone to sleep.
(Edit: my 2nd son)
Haha! This reminds me of the time both Mr Ish and myself were studying with the Open University. We'd drag our books out, sit either end of the sofa and start to read. Gradually, we'd shuffle lower and lower until we looked just like this! Biochemistry was the worst!!

Thank you for the fun entry into the competition. It certainly illustrates how mentally tiring study can be. You've put just the right amount of detail into the photo.

That wasn't what I expected! I thought you might submit a Lensbaby close up of a corner of a textbook :) To me this is a well laid out photo including all the essentials of study with no distracting elements and your lovely daughter(?) working hard. She's being very restrained about the snacks!

Had intended to sit this one out until I stumbled across this shot from my 2007 Fort Steele series.

This is interesting. You've given us a glimpse of education in a bygone era. No exercise books, just slates, so no need for desks, just tables. And probably the teacher wrote everything on the board for the pupils to copy. If there were textbooks presumably they'd be handed in at the end of the lesson. The rich colours in these old desks make for a very appealing photo.

[From my archives since right now our county library branches are providing online and curbside service only and I can't go into the building]

The public library: a place to study, to learn, to read, to dream.....

Libraries are certainly all these things and I've always loved them. That's a good angle too, looking down on the many thousands of books, enhanced by the industrial lighting. Haha, I've just noticed this centre of learning being enlivened by the stuffed dragon!

How fortunate Yale University is to have such a magnificent library! Thank you for sharing. You've caught the combination well, with the library stacks and the ecclesiastical background. I like your use of symmetry too.

Thank you for sharing one of your Lego models. I've been looking online but can't find any clues as to which one this is, or maybe you did it from your own imagination. I can see the little figure with the book, once upon a time and he looks as though he's reading from it. Apologies for my Lego ignorance but it looks beautifully executed!

At the beginning.........

Thank you for sharing this special picture of this part of the Torah, the Writings relating to His Holiness, Moses. Is this a scroll, because they do not appear to be bound? The inclusion of the Yad emphasises the sacredness of the text, in that it is used for pointing rather than touching the holy text. I like your use of a narrow depth of field that simulates how a page looks when we're studying it closely.

Thank you for all your submissions! There are more photos I'd like to include for places than there are places to give, so if your photo isn't in the top three it doesn't mean I don't like it. So without further ado, these are my choices:

3rd place: @mollyc for a very timely photo on study
2nd place: @deep diver for a beautiful, meaningful entry
1st place: @oblomow for a photo with the narrow focus solely on study

I've enjoyed every single picture in this contest but now it's over to you @oblomow !

oh. Thank you! For judging and the dreaded first place. It was a great theme, unfortunately I had to take an image from the archives, but it's nice to have an archive.
I will come up with a new theme later today.

Thank you for the coveted 2nd place. I nailed it!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, this is from a scroll. I shot the image a little wider but the atzei hayim were a distraction. (atzei hayim = "Trees of Life." This is the Hebrew name for the dowels used for rolling the parchment.). The DOF is partially intentional and partially thrust upon me. The parchment in the lower part of the image sits more than 1/2 inch above the table because of its natural texture.
